How does this compared to the $5 multimeter? I don't understand the high price tag for it.

There is a reason professionals buy fluke. Construction quality. Accuracy. Range of measurement (e.g. 1000v). Variety of measurement (e.g. temperature). But if a $5 multimeter works for you, you likely don't have the need to upgrade.

It's more accurate, safer, will last forever. Most people are fine with a $15 multimeter. Flukes are like a professional tool where the cheaper multimeters are gadgets for hobbyists. Also Flukes have a great resale value. 20 year old Fluke multimeters on eBay still cost at least half of what they did back then.

The 17B+ is the Chinese version of whatever the main American one is I don't remember. But a decade ago this was a huge secret at around $50.

Accuracy and reliability. Accurate readings are crucial when circuit building or properly diagnosing issues.I've used and abused my Fluke, close to 15 years old now, and it's still going strong. This is a Buy it for Life brand.

according to google AI:

The original Fluke 17B has largely been superseded by the "Plus" version, and there is now a newer Fluke 17B MAX model that offers further improvements such as an Input Alert Alarm

I had a UEI meter for about 5 years before it crapped out on me. In a pinch I bought a "cheap" $80 meter at Grainger. Went to a job where they generate their own power. Stick my new meter on a disconnect and read zero volts. The in house electrician put his fluke on and read 277v. I returned that meter and bought a Fluke. I've used it daily since that day in 2008.

I was curious as well, so I looked up the specs:
https://www.fluke.com/en-us/produ...E3EUX41GWe

.5% accuracy after 1 year is awfully good for a voltage measurement and high accuracy on other measurements. I have a cheaper DVM and discovered that the accuracy is about 3x worse. If you dont need the accuracy, and your life doesnt depend on your measurements, then get what works for you and plan to throw it away and get another one. I needed an accurate measurement for a power supply recently and discovered that my DVM wasnt good enough.
