i absolutely would not expect it to be any cheaper than $750 on Black Friday. Typical sales price is $850 with a few better sales having been $800. Very good chance this is the only sub $800 you'll see for the rest of the year.
Even for basic users you have to really ask yourself if you're ok not keeping your photos/video library on the computer, how much email and local file space you'll need, how many apps you'll install, etc.
256GB can be ok, like if you're going to use it like a chrome book or mostly use web apps. But it's on the edge. The space the OS and apps and ML models/Apple intelligence take up is only getting bigger.

I have a M1 air with 8gb/500gb and that RAM (somewhat the CPU) has only recently become an issue, and I do some hobby dev stuff on it.I'd like >16gb on my next one --mostly to allow ML/LLM models to be loaded and still have ~16Gb of headroom for everything else-- but I think I could get by.
I agree though on the storage space; 500GB is quite constraining for me. 1tb is likely the better place for me to spend (than RAM) on the next machine I get.
Tried out a MBA 15" M3 24GB and a MBA 13" M4 16GB.
I'm mostly just browsing the web and watching media. I don't do any video editing or audio editing. I have a few of those small utility apps installed (like 3-finger tap, AltTab, etc.) and 16GB is perfectly fine for my use case. I even run the M4 in Low-Power mode for extra battery life and don't regret it enough to return it and get the 24GB RAM one.
I do have a gaming desktop PC if I ever need to do anything intensive (not that I do video/audio editing with that) and I do think 512GB of Storage is something you should think about getting.
I'm new to Apple Macs. I've had an iPhone forever. Never get AppleCare for my phone. Is it recommended for a computer? Why? I'm not going to drop it, etc. But my last computer, Dell XPS, had given me ALL kinds of problems.
