Helium Mobile Zero is a free backup or secondary line that can be handy for basic data, verification texts, and occasional calls on T Mobile coverage. eSIM activation is often quick and can work without much friction, and the app can be removed after setup. The main catches are the ID and selfie checks for some activations, physical SIM stock problems, and reports of odd usage tracking or data limits. The plan also appears to be changing, with taxes and fees now applying and the free offer ending for new users.

  • backup-line users who want to avoid always-on location sharing because commenters said the Zero plan no longer requires app-based location sharing and they could keep location off while still getting service.

  • people who mainly need verification texts and can use Google Voice for voice/text otherwise because commenters said the free plan is good for SMS verification while they use GV for the rest.

  • travelers who want a line that can work overseas because commenters reported it worked well abroad (including in Europe) and sometimes even without internet, similar to other prepaid options.

  • people using a spare/secondary phone for things like drone mapping or commute traffic because 3GB/month was enough for their use and they liked having mobile data for the drone map instead of tethering over Wi‑Fi.

  • iPhone users who want a quick eSIM activation on an older spare device because one commenter said setup on a spare iPhone XR took about 3 minutes and eSIM activation worked after installing the Helium app.

  • people who can't or don't want to provide government ID/selfie/biometrics because multiple commenters said identity verification was excessive or blocked them from getting a SIM (including cases where they couldn't complete verification).

  • people relying on physical SIMs right now because commenters reported physical SIM stock was temporarily unavailable/out of order and orders failed even when accounts were created.

  • people who want a "set it and forget it" data allowance because commenters reported confusing data tracking/"phantom" usage and warnings that could lead to losing the plan if the app meter doesn't match what they actually used.

  • people who are uncomfortable with the plan potentially changing from "free" to paid/taxes/fees because commenters shared that the Zero plan was later reported as no longer free and that payment method/taxes/fees could be required or service could be suspended if not updated.

  • people who need eSIM on phones that don't support it because at least one commenter said their Moto G Stylus 2022 couldn't use eSIM capability.

Some app reviews say the app drains battery fast. Is it like Texnow that has its own app and dialer? I've never used eSIM so i'm not sure how i would use the stock dialer with 2 numbers pSIM and eSIM, if this app is for other purposes.
The app battery drain, which I haven't personally experienced, was rendered moot when they eliminated the always-on location sharing requirement. You don't even have to keep the app installed after activation if you don't want. It uses your phone's dialer/SMS apps, unlike TextNow.

The phone I/you own doesn't have eSIM capability, BUT you can always wait until they get the physical SIM card back in stock like I intend doing.
How long is the anticipated wait?

According to a Reddit post I found, this plan has been available for the past 9 months.
So no, this doesn't appear to be a limited time promo, OK.
That's true. I was going to try the free Zero plan last week, but I decided to wait again with concern about giving out government ID. When I saw this deal, I couldn't find anything different from what I knew for the Zero plan for a while. Did I miss something for this deal?

I don't think you have missed anything.
The deal has just been picked up by SD's and hence all of the current fervor.

If you need a physical SIM, you can get physical eSIMs and a USB reader. You get the manual activation code and can download the eSIM onto the physical eSIM.
It's not compatible with all phones though. Doesn't work in my Pixel 9a but it does work in my Galaxy Fold 6.

I know it is not required now but in my experience, location sharing was not enforced, I turned it off and the line worked just fine for months.

Btw, there is an add-on now to have unlimited talk&text for $5/m.
Location sharing is going away, no longer required on all plans. I believe they're implementing that change this week

Our family has been used their services for couple of months. We only use hundreds of MB for data a month. Zero dollar on phone bills. esim setup is easy. I even transferred esim from an iPhone 16 to an iPhone 17.

Yep, I received the notification that I hadn't used any data but the app said that I had. I ignored the notice and my SIM still works.
I'm in the same boat. They sent me to the email saying that i didn't use any data but when i check my data status it shows 2.6 gig but I couldn't use anymore data.

I signed up to helium with my old back up phone a while back. There was a promotional offer where they gave like $50 of free gift cards to users. Hopefully, they bring something like that back for newer users. Their business model is very interesting and curious to see how it turns out in the future.

My wife signed up for a Zero account a few days ago and had to upload her selfie and image of DL only to be notified by Helium that the company wasn't currently providing SIM cards for Zero accounts. Checking the Status Page for Helium confirms that "Temporary Unavailability" started Oct. 23. Helium is still providing eSIMs for all subscribers.

From heliummobile.statuspage.io

Update - We are continuing to work on a fix for this issue.
Oct 23, 2025 - 15:29 PDT
Identified - Physical SIM cards are temporarily unavailable to order for Zero Plan activations. eSIMs are still available for all subscribers. Paid plan orders are not affected.

We are working to restock availability as soon as possible.

You can use physical eSIM (eUICC) in non-eSIM capable phones, 9esim is a good option

So this requires to have an unlocked phone for it to work?
Thanks!
