Helium Mobile Zero is a free backup or secondary line that can be handy for basic data, verification texts, and occasional calls on T Mobile coverage. eSIM activation is often quick and can work without much friction, and the app can be removed after setup. The main catches are the ID and selfie checks for some activations, physical SIM stock problems, and reports of odd usage tracking or data limits. The plan also appears to be changing, with taxes and fees now applying and the free offer ending for new users.

My phone currently has TextNow on my eSIM. If I add an eSIM for this, would it work?

My wife signed up for a Zero account a few days ago and had to upload her selfie and image of DL only to be notified by Helium that the company wasn't currently providing SIM cards for Zero accounts. Checking the Status Page for Helium confirms that "Temporary Unavailability" started Oct. 23. Helium is still providing eSIMs for all subscribers.

From heliummobile.statuspage.io

Update - We are continuing to work on a fix for this issue.
Oct 23, 2025 - 15:29 PDT
Identified - Physical SIM cards are temporarily unavailable to order for Zero Plan activations. eSIMs are still available for all subscribers. Paid plan orders are not affected.

We are working to restock availability as soon as possible.

I think your phone can store multiple esims but you can only use 1 at a time

Thanks but it is less than the Helium 3gb data and unlimited txt/call for the same (12x$5). Personally I don't even need unlimited, only got Helium for the mobile net and some verifications texts, otherwise use GV for voice/txt.

So, what is the catch with this "free" plan? Apart from my ID, what else do I need to give up to get this free plan?

I'm unaware of any method to place a SIM order when the product isn't in stock. To be among the first to order when the "fresh batch" of SIM cards are "back in stock": 1.) Turn on notifications for your Helium app, 2.) Subscribe To Updates at heliummobile.statuspage.io, and/or 3.) Check daily for the SIM availability status at heliummobile.statuspage.io. (Only recently I became a Zero account subscriber, so I'm not sure how valid these options will prove to be.)

I think they take foreign passports.. So if you're a dual citizen it could work... Or try using a US passport...

Just downloaded the app, and just from the first screen, it is very clear as to what they are getting for this being free. Yes, as always you are the product. Your activity is going to be sold to all the retailers whose logos are flying across the app screen. What is more, with location, and precise ID information. Huge privacy black-hole. No thank you. I'd rather get something for $6/month as and when I need it.

UPDATE: At about 6:00pm ET Helium sent me an email stating, "Incident Resolved...Physical SIM cards are now available again. Thank you for your patience." My wife ordered a SIM and received confirmation number/email.
