When they recently announced no longer needing location services to be on, they did add a requirement that you use some data each month.

I bring this up because some of us would be on this plan only for a backup phone not normally used (like me).

So here is my first month of experiencing this new requirement.
The first couple of months on the plan I've had the phone not using it at all with location services on.
Once I started with this new twist I have no idea how but with virtually no use my data usage in the app states I've used 2.3GB out of 3. But I cannot get data to work now. I contacted them and they claim I ran out of data. But the meter has said 2.3GB usage for 2 weeks. It never updated higher and I do not use the phone. Plus I keep wifi on except for the first day, in order to use some data for only a few minutes.

So something is not jiving. They claim the stats may not be up to date, but they def should have been reflected properly by now (I would expect). Since I have no prior data usage, maybe they just have a bad tracking system...

Meanwhile they sent me 2 emails warning me no data was used and I needed to use data or I would lose the plan. When I inquired about these warnings each time, they claimed they were just sent in error the first time and they not only claimed the same thing the second time, but they also said they sent the same warning to everyone on the zero plan in error.
I find that very hard to believe.

So time will tell whether my data works properly or at all in my next cycle (when I should be replenished to 3GB available again). Or if my account gets canceled due to not using data, even though the CSR said I used all of my 3GB.

With the way things went this month, I feel like anything could happen, including losing my account and having to start all over with a new number.

If anyone has had weird stuff happening like this (under the new data usage requirement) please chime in.

My wife signed up for a Zero account a few days ago and had to upload her selfie and image of DL only to be notified by Helium that the company wasn't currently providing SIM cards for Zero accounts. Checking the Status Page for Helium confirms that "Temporary Unavailability" started Oct. 23. Helium is still providing eSIMs for all subscribers.

From heliummobile.statuspage.io

Update - We are continuing to work on a fix for this issue.
Oct 23, 2025 - 15:29 PDT
Identified - Physical SIM cards are temporarily unavailable to order for Zero Plan activations. eSIMs are still available for all subscribers. Paid plan orders are not affected.

We are working to restock availability as soon as possible.
Oct 23, 2025 - 12:49 PDT

Tuesday Nov. 11 UPDATE: At about 6:00pm ET Helium sent me an email stating, "Incident Resolved...Physical SIM cards are now available again. Thank you for your patience." My wife ordered a SIM and received confirmation number/email.

I use this.
  • I signed up at the end of July.
  • I am using it on a Pixel 8a. I am using an e-sim.
  • It's my backup phone for gig work (used for completing my deliveries when in dead zones).
  • I tether it to my main phone; flip tethering on when I hit a dead zone, flip it off when I leave. Tethering works fine.
  • My sign up did not require any personal info upload/validation.
  • I simply installed the app, created the account, activated the esim, and was off & running.
  • Before they removed the location data requirement, I just limited permissions to "permit only this time" when opening the app. It never caused problems.
  • I think I've seen the data usage amount occasionally be reported wrong in-app. I mostly just use Android's built-in data usage meter to track it. You just set the correct "new month" rollover date. I set a 2GB and 2.5GB warning in Android.
  • Data signal has been very reliable. I have not made any calls or texts.
  • If you upgrade to a Helium paid plan, you can never come back to the free plan (APPARENTLY, SO I'VE HEARD)
Thanks for the info. How can you set the location permission?
I am on my iPhone, I chose Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Location Services, there are 65 apps listed to be set "Never/While Using the App/Always", but I couldn't find Helium Mobile in the list(and I double checked).

I used my Android phone last week to sign up the service(went through the ID verification), and I am receiving the pSIM today or tomorrow. However, I would like to use the pSIM on my iPhone instead, but can I install the Helium app on my iPhone then activate the pSIM there, or if the activation and the use of the pSIM have locked to the phone during signup/registration? Thanks!
don't even think you need the app installed at this point but people were already using the sim from a different phone when location data was required

My another question:In a household, there are two persons (wife & husband), two different IDs, two different emails, two different phones, but the same household address. In such a case, can I sign up two different accounts?
I signed up 5 accounts using the same address with 5 IDs.

If the Helium hotspots are making it cheaper, are they selling HotSpot service to public?
Who sells them?
So it is internet for home?
What does Solana Blockchain do here - marketing?

Xfinity routers also has a hotspot built in - after the law suite, you could turn it off or on!

I got a extra line for my dad. I was able to move his Google voice number over so he didn't wind up with some random number that nobody can remember that gets spam multiple times a day. Free Psim showed up after 3 day. There's no option to port in Google voice, so I chose Google Fi and the number transferred after a few minutes. As usual, phone number is the account number, pin doesn't matter, $3 to unlock.

Not sure if this would work for my situation. I travel out of the country once a year and stay 3 months. I'm not sure if I could use this phone while in Asia. I had a Text Now number and account, but it was cancelled because I didn't use the phone the 3 months I was out of the country.
You most likely can use the service in Asia if you can enable WiFi calling in the phone settings. I use my cheap T. Mobile $15 prepaid service in China for Text verifications and occasional calling to the states and it works fine when connected to wifi. I will assume this shouldn't be any different.

I always worried about their usage of customer face and id. think about if their website got hacked, and all of customer user id and face got stolen. the hacker can use our id and face to do a lot of thiings, including open another account , with powerful AI assistance, they can make up our face voice, and everything, and open all different accounts. My question is whether this company is a reputable company that has full security to protect our identity. think about our face is our biometric. same as your fingerprint. They can use your face or fingerprint to open your house door.

This. The ID and selfie requirement is why I haven't signed up for Helium. It being a "free" service, not only do I expect potential holes in their data security (even expensive postpaid services have had breaches), but it wouldn't surprise me if they're actually selling your uploaded ID and selfie along with all your other data.

exactly. I am thinking there is no free lunch. They do it free for exchaning something. Even it's not exchange purpose, how do we know the customer information is secured and safe in their site. I'd rather pay a bit more than losing my identity. Now adays, the AI become extremely powerful, the bad guy can easily make up a new photo when they have your bio information.

Yeah, I mentioned seeing phantom usage earlier in the thread.

I signed up a week ago. I now have 39 texts in app usage count but I only used 3. The most outrageous thing is I have received over 10 scam/random area codes incoming calls every SINGLE day except Christmas day. With no intention of using the new phone number, I have to be on DND 24 hrs and turned on calls barring.
