You still can record to local SD card and remotely access that for free.
personally I have a bunch of Wyze stuff and was pretty happy with it, but if I were starting over I'd go with Eufy or TP-Link for devices that don't require subscriptions for fairly basic functions.

Also, because I have my cameras on a separate IOT network, the TP link video streams timeout so I can't just leave it on while I'm washing dishes to keep an eye on my kids.
