#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A "bracing" (Vox) guide for surviving and resisting America's turn towards authoritarianism, from "a rising public intellectual unafraid to make bold connections between past and present" (The New York Times)

"Timothy Snyder reasons with unparalleled clarity, throwing the past and future into sharp relief. He has written the rare kind of book that can be read in one sitting but will keep you coming back to help regain your bearings."—Masha Gessen

The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

On Tyranny is a call to arms and a guide to resistance, with invaluable ideas for how we can preserve our freedoms in the uncertain years to come.

Timely and insightful. A quick and powerful read with many callbacks to historical parallels and warning signs, as well as ways to counteract and resist the downward spiral into tyrannical authoritarianism.

I've been reading a lot lately about the shifting nature of tyranny towards the technocrats and oligarchs, so I'm not sure how I feel padding the pockets of Bezos and Jassy with this.

But I'll put it on my library list!

I was born in the USSR and still remember what living under an authoritarian regime feels like. It's honestly concerning how many Americans today don't seem to recognize the warning signs when they see them. The disregard for institutions, the cult of personality, the attacks on the press, it all feels uncomfortably familiar. It's not just American ignorance. Most people here have never lived under dictatorship, so they think "it can't happen here." Civic education has declined, the media is fractured into echo chambers, and populist rhetoric wrapped in patriotism feels comforting instead of dangerous. Combine that with a fading understanding of how democracy actually works, and it's easy to see why many don't recognize when someone like Trump starts leaning toward pure tyranny. Authoritarian movements often succeed by appealing to emotion like fear, nostalgia, resentment rather than reason. Many voters respond to the feeling of strength and certainty, especially in times of social change or economic anxiety, not realizing how similar this dynamic has been in every authoritarian rise in history.
