I too used Amazon knock off brands before and they worked just fine.
It's simply astonishing how those scum feel they can randomly price their Chinese crap. It is a virtual certainty that those "Two for just $90" filters cost the manufacturer about $2 to make in quantity, and the people flogging them (OEM appliance makers and retailers like Amazon) are paying about $5 each.
On my Whirlpool fridge, the water feed comes from a very good three stage filter under the sink that I use to filter ALL the drinking/cooking water in the kitchen, including the feed to the fridge. When the original filter that came with the fridge indicated it was time to change it, I just pulled it out. That bypassed the filter assembly.
I am confident that my three stage filter under the sink does a good enough job that I don't need to be ripped off by Whirlpool every six months with their outrageous filter pricing. The original cost of the under sink filter set was about $100 ten years ago, and since then I have replaced the three filters in it about once a year (or longer) for about $40-$50 and all the drinking/cooking water is filtered.
Just pay attention to the rate of water flow from the filter packs' output - when it's time to change the three internal filters, the flow will decrease noticeably.
