What is the advantage of this versus a regular non-Xbox branded external hard drive?

It's optimized and pre-configured for this specific purpose, as well as styled to complement the Xbox console. At about $16/TB it's hard to beat for bulk gaming storage on a budget. Obviously SSDs are a better solution for raw speed if you can spend more.

Just so everyone is aware, this still does not allow you to play Series X/S games from it. You can store them here, but they need to be transferred to play. The expansion card that utilizes the special slot if the only external storage that allows play of series x/s games. USB doesn't have fast enough transfer speeds to play series x/s games from what Microsoft claims

pretty much the same as any other mechanical drive that is 5400rpm, the ssd drives are the way to go if you want to play new games on external storage. the mechanical drives are only going to be good for x360 and some xone games

Amazon reviews shed quite a bit of light on this drive's capabilities. Average 4.5 of 5 stars, 78% 5 stars, USB 3.2 interface:

Heads up the Xbox usb ports are ALWAYS ON so unplug your drives to keep them from running when you power down the console.

The 500GB Series S runs out of storage quick and while an HDD like this is okay you will have to transfer newer games to the main drive which unless you have gigabit internet is usually faster than re-downloading.

Thanks for sharing. I expected an inexpensive spinning external drive to be somewhat limited in performance. On the other hand, it's a respected brand name officially certified and licensed by Xbox at a great price. Not for everyone, but a solid solution for some.

More specifically:You can playall Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games directly from an external hard drive. However, Xbox Series X|S optimized games (which have the Series X|S badge) cannot be played from an external USB HDD or SSD and must be stored on the console's internal SSD or an official storage expansion card to be playable.

I don't foresee any issues with using it as a standard external drive like any other, if you don't mind the Xbox branding and LED bar. At the end of the day, this is a standard HDD with USB interface, with specs that Xbox is happy with for use with their consoles. Definitely an attractive price; 5TB externals are generally well over $100.
