Right now, Microcenter has better-than-Apple-edu prices on the Mac Studio. However, they do not have all the choices apple offers, like the 80-core GPU or 512GB of memory.

I have BB price match lots of things. from MC. Airpods 4, $77, M4 mini, $450 and m4 mini pro, $999. takes all of a few minute on chat.
$2500 for the 64/1TB matches their cheapest price from a while back... it has been $2700 for a long time now.
I agree the 36 is crap. I had 128 in my 2020 iMac, hit swap, now have 64 in my M1 Max, same thing.... although less often. I need 96 or 128 to avoid it. Thankfully its just easier -- and cheaper -- to restart...

What's with the small hard drives? These shouldn't come with less than 2TB.

Not necessarily. i'd say for most people (36G should more than enough). myself bought this exactly machine about 7 months ago, love it so far. As a developer, i'd say unless you are trying to run LLM locally, there is really not need to get 64G or above.

I had M1 Max 64G MBP before, and this machine is a great upgrade from there , despite with less RAM.

IMO, 32 GB RAM on a UNIX based OS (Mac OS) is plenty of memory for almost every task and almost every user. While more RAM is a fun talking point, software development, video editing, etc will run under 32 GB RAM with no problem. If you have more memory than you use, it does not provide ANY additional performance. I would be considered a power user, I have a Linus laptop with 32 GB RAM that I use for software development, and a Mac 4 mini with 16 GB ram that I use for everything else. I never run out of RAM. If you need more, you will know.

FWIW when I went to order my MacBook Pro I was trying to decide between an M4 Pro with 48 GB RAM and an M4 Max with 36. The M4 Max had higher memory bandwidth, so I ended up going with that, hoping I wouldn't regret it. I don't run local LLMs but I do use a lot of memory hungry apps simultaneously (sometimes just because I'm mid-project when another unrelated project comes up) and so far I haven't had any issues and still have some head room on memory usage. Will it be a smart choice long-term? Who knows. I anticipate AI will kill us all before this MacBook becomes too slow, haha

LOL. spend 80% of my day in Indesign, PS, Acrobat (magazine designer, 5 books) AI, DW -- and use multiple browsers for social media management with multiple clients -- far simpler to have each in their own "space" -- CMS work for digital magazines as well. ID, PS and FF will use 80 GBs no sweat. memory pressure a steady 40-60% all day. thank god I don't do any video... .

M1 MAX 64/1TB still running slightly over $1K. I have seen some 64/4TB configs for $1500, add a $850 5K Asus for a "comparable" 2020 5K iMac with similar specs.
