TCL's 85QM8K stands out as a bright mini LED set with strong picture quality for the money, especially in controlled lighting. RTINGS comparisons put it ahead of the Samsung QN90D, and the TV is described as impressive enough to make upgrading from that model tempting. The main concerns are direct reflections, blooming in bright sports scenes, and possible weakness with hockey or lower resolution cable sources. It feels like a strong large screen option if your room lighting and source quality are under control.
Sports fans watching in a controlled room, because the picture stays strong with ambient light managed and motion concerns are the main remaining question.
People watching hockey or other fast sports from lower-resolution broadcasts, because motion handling and 720p or 1080i sources are specifically questioned.

The panel has poor direct reflection handling, so direct light can be a problem. With controlled ambient light, it can still look very good, and some owners say it is at least on par with a Bravia 7 for reflections.
Blooming can still show up around high-contrast objects like football players in white jerseys on green grass. It is still considered a strong mini-LED set, but it may not fully eliminate the haloing seen on other bright-room TVs.
The 85-inch model uses a 600 x 500 VESA pattern. TCL's product page and quick-start guide both list that size, so a 600 x 600 mount would be the wrong fit.
TCL QM8K Series Smart TV is The New, Ultimate Choice TV for fast action movies, sports, and next level gaming TCL's Halo Control System that includes the New Super High Energy LED Microchip, Condensed Micro Lens, Micro OD Reduced Optical Distance, CrystGlow WHVA Panel, Enhanced QLED, Zero Delay Transient Response, Bi-direction 23-bit Backlight Controller, and Dynamic Light Algorithm for Stunning "Halo-Free" Images. With up to LD3800 Precise Dimming Series and up to HDR5000 Brightness, you'll experience pure black levels and a great picture in virtually any room lighting environment.
Tempting but keep wondering how it specifically handles hockey (white screen and fast motion). I've read very mixed reviews about this. Not to mention 720p or 1080i TV media

I bit on the $1099 85 inch QN90D from Sam's Club but this is one one I wanted. The QN90D has visible blooming you can tell. It's a very nice TV but you can see the blooming in many situations like around football players in white jerseys on green grass.
Would it make sense to swap for the TCL for the extra $700? or will it have the same issues?

I'm mainly concerned with streaming. Granted, I'm coming from a 2019 edge lit Samsung, but most of the TV we have on (my wife) is reality shows and whatnot. I feel like as long as it's not worse than that, it would be gravy for me.
Rtings says model has terrible direct reflection handling I was surprised to see that it otherwise is on par with the 2025 Samsung QN90F. There's some real competition in this price band now!

The TV can be returned easily if reflection performance does not meet expectations.
The 85-inch model's VESA mount size is listed as 600x500, which helps with planning wall mounting.
The QM8K is reported to handle ambient lighting in a controlled way during viewing.
Fast-motion scenes like hockey may show white-screen or motion handling problems, especially with 720p or 1080i sources.
Direct reflection handling is described as poor by RTINGS, which can matter in bright rooms with glare.
Side-by-side viewing reportedly makes the QM8K look dull on real content in a bright room.
Visible blooming is a concern when comparing against a Samsung QN90D, raising uncertainty about similar issues on the TCL.
