I've never found steam cleaning magical for either. If you're stovetop is a wreck like mine is, steam will soften whatever is baked on but there is still some elbow grease required to work it off. Worked better on grout (assuming it is sealed) but I found myself running out of water and steam pretty quickly so the process can be slow if you have any quantity of area you want to work on

You need a good brush. I use a beefy brush (not the ones included in these types of kits) and it works spectacularly for super baked-on stuff.
