The Terrex Free Hiker 2.0 Gore Tex comes across as a lightweight, comfortable hiking shoe with strong ankle support, grippy Continental traction, and reliable waterproofing for mud, rain, and snow. It handles long steep hikes, rocky trails, creek crossings, and even winter outings well, while still feeling cushioned enough for all day wear. Fit is the main wrinkle, since the opening can feel narrow or hard to get into, though loosening the laces or wearing thick socks helps. Waterproofing also appears to wear down over time for some, making it a solid trail option if the fit works for your foot.

  • The Gore-Tex waterproofing can help keep feet drier during mud and rain hikes.

  • The shoes can provide strong ankle support and comfortable cushioning on rough trails.

  • The Continental outsole can deliver grippy traction for steep snowy and technical scrambling routes.

  • The lace version can be easier to get on for wider feet than a sock-sleeve version.

  • The fit can feel narrow at the opening, making the foot hard to get into even with loosened laces.

  • The mid-foot fit can feel slightly loose, which may require thick socks for a better hold.

  • The waterproofing can fade after about one season, leaving feet wetter than regular sneakers.

Is the BOOST midsole the same as the ultraboost?
Ultraboost is a shoe model, like these are the Free Hiker. Both these and Ultraboosts have the BOOST midsole.

Lasted one season before they lost all their waterproof'ness. Even wet streets get my feet wet worse than regular sneakers. However the shoe itself doesn't wear out so I'm on the fence. Would not get another pair

I got mine today and I think they really suck, IMHO. My biggest problem is I can't get my foot in. I loosen the laces so much but have to kinda force it in, so narrow. I never owned these kind of shoes before so not sure if thats standard but just going to return them.

Why does this say, see deal at Amazon? I would prefer Amazon for an extra 5% back!

got the black ones over a year ago from Adida Ebay for $62. I like them. I use them during the winter or when it is raining outside.

Exactly. I clicked in because I'd rather deal with Amazon in case I need to return them but it's actually sold by eBay.

I used these throughout Utah and Wyoming over the last winter/spring for many longer (10-15mile) steep hikes in snow, often with some technical scrambling (i.e. Middle and South Teton, Lone Peak, Pfeifferhorn), and snowshoe outings. They performed great overall, nice cushion for trail running, Continental outsole is grippy, GTX waterproofing worked well. Only issue is they are not a perfect fit for me, feel a little loose in the mid-foot, better with thick socks, but for the price I still feel they're an excellent value.
