I swapped back to Nike a few years ago. These are one of my favorites, but also noticed something. These and maybe other models, the rubber on the bottom of the shoes are so thin. I'm thinking they did this on purpose so the shoes wear out and you'll have to buy another. It's crazy thin.

No, they sell new ugly shoes at a discount when the season is coming to a close and they need room for new product

You occasionally get these deals in some random box that was clearly out in the store with people trying them on, but actually run in, I'd be returning them.

Could be. I've received some Clifton's that had some white gum looking thing on the sole and areas that seemed damaged. Some of these, they'll ship in a bag, no box

Never thought of this but have to agree. I did get on clouds from dicks months ago shipped that had some grey scuffs but didn't think much of it since it looked new.

I'm waiting for a discount on the new Vomero line from Nike. Those look very cushiony, bouncy and comfortable.

How are these for walking? I've been trying to put in 15k steps/day (4k of which are formal zone-2 treadmill waking). I've been wearing Free 2019s and the front balls of my feet are starting to get a little sore after a few months.

Overkill for walking but you can't go wrong with these if that's all you plan on doing.

I love my pair and I put in 300+ miles on mine from running before I retired them. They're now my go-to for travel walk/run shoes.

These and other shoes in their line are directed at runners mostly. Typically you'd swap these out at around 300 miles ish, due the soles no longer giving the same cushioning/compression (i used to know the technical reason, but it's been ages and i just do it out of habit now). I used to run in the predecessor to these, the Pegasus Turbo and Turbo 2, which had a similarly thin rubber sole. I never had an issue and hit my 300 miles before soles wore out. If the soles were thicker, they'd add more weight, which, in this class of shoe, people try to avoid.

If you want more, better, and/or longer-lasting tread, go for either legit trail running shoes or shoes with with Pumagrip, which is found on some surprisingly affordable Puma running shoes. Nike seems like they don't bother to put much effort into tech and quality of their training shoes, instead relying on the reputation of their elite racing shoes (Vaporfly, Alphafly, etc.) to carry their more accessible (read: affordable) trainers, including these.
