Tapo cameras stand out for local recording, RTSP support, and easy integration with Blue Iris and Home Assistant, with the dual lens PTZ model keeping a moving person in frame. The hardwired design is a plus for anyone wanting steadier power than solar models, and the cameras can work well with microSD storage and no monthly service. The main drawbacks are inconsistent notifications on some setups, occasional app sleep issues, limited tilt on the fixed lens, and no PoE or Google Home support. A solid local security option if those tradeoffs fit.
Common Questions (5)
Motion alerts can be inconsistent: some setups stop sending notifications after the app sleeps, while others report fast notifications for years. On Android, changing battery optimization or sleep settings can help keep the app awake.
No monthly service is needed for local recording; it uses a microSD card and can also be used locally with the built-in NVR feature. Rich notifications, face recognition, and image previews are tied to a paid monthly plan.
No solar Tapo camera provides true 24/7 recording; they rely on motion-triggered recording and can be late on motion events. For continuous recording, hardwired power is the practical option.
Yes, several Tapo/Kasa models support RTSP local streaming and integrate well with Blue Iris and Home Assistant. That makes them suitable for a local dashboard or automation setup without relying on the cloud.
The $30 Tapo camera is pan/tilt only and does not have optical zoom. The dual-lens model can rotate the moving camera to keep a person in frame, but the cheaper PT model itself is still just PT.

The dual lens cam is great. It rotates the one camera when a person is moving to keep them in frame.
I will be mounting mine on my service drop power pole and plugging it into an outlet on my sub panel.

Regarding the Tapo, the power adapters on the ones I have are a barrel plug and it seems antiquated and annoying, why not just give USB-C or even micro USB. Picture quality, Eufy and Tapo seem to be about the same for a cheap camera.
I wouldn't mind a PTZ camera, so I may talk myself into one of these, but I'll probably wait for the BF splurge.
