Tapo cameras stand out for local recording, RTSP support, and easy integration with Blue Iris and Home Assistant, with the dual lens PTZ model keeping a moving person in frame. The hardwired design is a plus for anyone wanting steadier power than solar models, and the cameras can work well with microSD storage and no monthly service. The main drawbacks are inconsistent notifications on some setups, occasional app sleep issues, limited tilt on the fixed lens, and no PoE or Google Home support. A solid local security option if those tradeoffs fit.

Common Questions (5)

  • Motion alerts can be inconsistent: some setups stop sending notifications after the app sleeps, while others report fast notifications for years. On Android, changing battery optimization or sleep settings can help keep the app awake.

  • No monthly service is needed for local recording; it uses a microSD card and can also be used locally with the built-in NVR feature. Rich notifications, face recognition, and image previews are tied to a paid monthly plan.

  • No solar Tapo camera provides true 24/7 recording; they rely on motion-triggered recording and can be late on motion events. For continuous recording, hardwired power is the practical option.

  • Yes, several Tapo/Kasa models support RTSP local streaming and integrate well with Blue Iris and Home Assistant. That makes them suitable for a local dashboard or automation setup without relying on the cloud.

  • The $30 Tapo camera is pan/tilt only and does not have optical zoom. The dual-lens model can rotate the moving camera to keep a person in frame, but the cheaper PT model itself is still just PT.

I tried switching from wyze to tapo but tapos app ahd problems so i ended up switching back. Tapo app seems to go to sleep after 2 weeks or so and stops sending you notifications if i just open the app the notification resumes but i never know when it stops. Also the memory card on the tapo cameras needs to be formatted every few months. It just stops recording for no reason. If i format the card it works again but that is also annoying. I guess all this is fine if you're constantly checking your cameras but if you only check them when you need to they never seem to be working when i need them.
If you are on andriod. Could be a setting on your device that puts the app to sleep. Go to the settings and change it to never put to sleep.

Wow. Tapo/TP-Link keeps getting better. Might strongly consider swapping over from my Wyze system. Impressive looking devices.
Definitely a very true statement, and I agree fully.
I'm saying and advising anyone on whatever that is working on the Yi App or Yi Lot App, to do the same.

Hmm tempting deals.. Wonder if black Friday will be better?
I hope and say YES, but no one knows for sure on a specific model.
Bottom line, there will be plenty of good choices for BF, and I'm waiting.

The Reolink smaller cameras are good like you said with plenty of sun. Now the Reolink PTZ cameras shouldn't run off solar panels, they consume a lot of power especially if high sensitivity is selected. I installed a PRZ Reolink at my friend's house, right on top of the garage and he has to take it down and charge it quite often. I told him the work around is to get power from a side light he has, just run a long cable from the camera to a light bulb socket adapter. Tried telling him to install a proper outdoor outlet but he is the type that shies away from any alterations to the house because of the wife.
I have their Altas PT Ultra and the panels that comes with it from Amazon is OK... really needs something bigger. I got 2 from Reolink and it did not come with any panels so I got 2 8w panels and they're put in the "less sunny side" on the property/fence. Seems to work ok. OEM Reolink panels works great for the Trackmix but they don't record 24/7.

As for your friend's wife... "situation", you can paint the cables to match the facia or soffit and it'll blend it well. Just a thought. Run the cable, tacks and all then paint over it.... That or have him get a Wife 2.0 thought uninstalling 1.0 is going to cost him. LOL

Does this come with an outdoor compatible power adapter or require a separate purchase like wyze?

The sad part five people found his post" helpful". I own two tapo cameras. Never formatted the memory card (Samsung high endurance).
This community is now loaded with wannabe experts, "connoisseurs," parrots, and redditors... all visible within this single product listing.

I share the same experience as you, but with 6 cameras (2 solar and 4 hardwired). I don't understand how these people have these "problems." Instead of finding the solution they write a story to act "helpful" for thumbs up.

Good to know. I couldn't get it to work with my Wyze cameras. I even bought their motion sensor and it only worked 50% of the time.I was trying to my garage light turn on automatically with movement.
learn to use rtsp and home assistant - you can do all the automation stuff within that platform.

Never had this issue with tapo app nor tapo cameras. I have 32 tapo devices and all synced to there app. One issue I had was router couldn't keep up with too many IoT devices.
What was your solution for the router?

Are these one of the camera systems that require signing up for a vendor app or account in order to use the cameras? i.e. is it stand alone at the home, or does it have to go through an external vendor server to use?

I made the switch a year ago and I am SO thankful I did. The cameras are miles more reliable wifi wise, I haven't had a hiccup on a single one of the 8 cameras I replaced. They are in identical spots as the wyze cameras were and they are just miles better overall. They also allow local recording and some ethernet connectivity.

Complete opposite experience for me. It may be your privacy settings or battery optimization settings because I've had the app installed on 3 separate devices for a year and I've never had a single issue.

Question about 24/7 recording. Do you mean recording 24/7 constantly?

Wanted to get into the Tapo ecosystem but when I tried to transfer my Kasa cams over to it I had nonstop issues getting them to work properly. Ended up switching back to Kasa. I'm impressed with these new devices coming out though. Maybe one day I'll try switching again.
They're the same mother brand and app. Mine all navigated to tapo app.
