This Creality filament dryer box is mainly a budget way to dry PLA, PETG, TPU, and ABS before printing, and it can also double as an external spool holder on a P1S. The drying function is useful for moisture prone PETG, stringing, blobs, and occasional bad batches, and it can help revive filament that has sat around. The box is not airtight and does cycle outside air, so it is meant for pre drying rather than long term storage. The main drawback is the single knob interface, which feels finicky and awkward. A basic but practical pick if you want drying without spending much more.

This or an air fryer from a thrift store?
Same price and no rancid grease in the cracks.

How effective are these really if they aren't pulling in outside air to heat that air to reduce its relative humidity that then dries out the filament?

If it's just heating the same air in the airtight container with the filament, doesn't the air just reach a new saturation relative humidity level and stop drying the rest of the filament?

Case in point: air fryers constantly replace the saturated air inside with freshly heated air to rapidly dry the contents.

Nice price for this, I have it and am considering another. My only gripe is the controls are wonky, you have to turn the wheel just right and press it to select time or temp. It did help me to be able to start using the 15 spools of shitty Creality Soleyin PLA I bought earlier in the year (that stuff is the worst filament I've ever used in my 10ish years of 3D printing)

They are effective, they are not air tight, the do cycle external air.

These dryers work but the interface is terrible. Spinning the knob to select between temp and time sometimes just doesnt work. I have 2 of them and they both are finicky for seemingly no reason.

I was thinking the same thing - in for 2 since they can also double as external spool holders for my P1S for TPU and ABS
As someone with a P1S that prints mostly ABS, unless you have your printer in a humid environment you shouldn't need to keep drying ABS (or dry at all). Out of PETG/PLA/ASA/ABS, ABS is the one I've never really had issues with just running them out of the box. If you are having issues with it make sure you are preheating the chamber a bit.

Sealed with desiccant would be better tho wouldn't it?

How noisy are these? I'm trying to decide between buying something like this or just buying a food dehydrator and hacking it since everything I hear says that food dehydrators are much quieter and do the same thing.

Is there a point of this if I am only using pla and petg?
For sure with PETG

It's one of the filaments that sucks up water the most next to Nylon. You will improve your print quality putting PETG in a dryer.

These dryers usually have a port you can connect it directly to your printer and it will print while the dryer is running.

Typically you toss the filament in and let it run for 12H to dry it out then print while it's on.

PETG will string and leave blobs on the print if it's not dry.

What type of filament do you generally use for?
I have only used various PLA (Silk, + etc) and PETG so far.

Is the enclosure air tight for storage?
No, not air tight. These are basically place the filament you want to print ahead of time to dry and then can print right from case. Would not use for storage.

How effective are these really...?
Effective enough where when I was having adhesion and stringing issues, placed in dryer at recommended time/temp and then printed fine.

I am a relatively new and casual 3D printer, so my filament will sit around for a while until next project, and have found this helps.

Note there is a post on the more advanced version, Creality Space Pi, for $36 from Aliexpress, which has a cleaner button touch interface than the knob on this.

IMO, no. Desiccant can be helpful for reducing moisture in storage but if you have filament that absorbs moisture, live in a humid environment, or get fresh filament that may still be wet then something like this is great to pop the spool in for a few hours before you print and you know it should be better. For me, I never had much issue with stringing or many types of filament but the Creality Soleyin needed it badly. I also used it for some TPU that I've had sitting for a couple of years, just to prep it for printing. I'm not saying don't use desiccant but this is a nice step to add imo.

I was thinking about getting one but end up buying food dehydrator and it works great. I'm using 5 gal bucket and drilled few holes on bottom to let the air circulate. This method is only for PLA and PETG, that's the only filament I use.

IMO yes. I never used to dry anything (only use PLA) and I am in a humid place but then I got some filament that seemed to be poorly sealed and get bad results. Since then I anneal everything I get for 2 hours at 55°C (including the bad batch I had before) and I have not had an issue since.

+1 for the weird interface. Once you get the hang of it it is easy to use but it really is a bit strange.

Received my order today. This is sealed, there is no intentional venting outside of the unit. So it'll bake out your filament but the moisture is going to stay in the unit.
