Dollar General's gift card promo is strongest for Xbox and select restaurant cards, with 20 percent off Xbox Game Pass cards and discounts on brands like Cracker Barrel, Cabela's, Bass Pro, Domino's, Burger King, Panera, and LongHorn. The ad is confusing, though, because the picture shows Game Pass Core while the text points to Game Pass Ultimate, and the $10 off two $25 cards offer appears limited to one transaction. Store policy also varies, since some locations only accept cash for gift cards. A practical pick if the right card is in stock and your store allows card payments.

  • Fraud Prevention: Gift cards, especially general-purpose ones like Visa or Mastercard prepaid cards, are a common target for scammers who use stolen credit or debit cards to quickly purchase the gift cards and then deplete the balance before the fraudulent transaction can be caught and reversed.
  • Chargebacks: When a stolen card is used, the legitimate cardholder reports the fraud, and their bank "charges back" the transaction. Since the funds on the gift card are usually spent immediately, the store (Dollar General) is often left responsible for the loss, as they cannot recover the money from the now-spent gift card.
But, it does vary by store. I have some stores near me that accept credit cards and some don't for gift cards.
The solution to the problem you described is super easy, and it's something my local Staples does when I purchase a Visa or MC Prepaid card. Match the ID and the credit card. Problem solved. Using cash to purchase GC creates other problems I mentioned before.

Few days ago Tom Brady's card shop in NYC got robbed of over $10,000 using a manual key entry scam. For that kind of money, they should have checked ID and credit card matches. Why stores don't do the very simple thing to make things easier for themselves and customers just baffles me. It only takes a few seconds to do a simple check. The chip reader was designed to be secure in POS, it was never meant to prevent thieves from getting a card and shopping everywhere.

I thought this same thing for a switch 2, but if I'm looking at the ad correctly, GameStop is bundled with Domino's. I don't know about you but I don't want a ton of domino's credit. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.
Good catch. I assumed it was just a card that you could load up and use however you wanted between the two locations. In other words, load it up with $500 and use it all at Gamestop. That's not helpful at all if I have to spend half of it at Dominos. I guess I'll pass after all. I was interested until then.

I just checked. Both Chase and US Bank offer 10% cash back (needs activation) if I recall correctly.

The machines don't request for an ID. You just swipe / tap, bag and walk out the door; especially when using it as a CC. My debit cards and CC all are signed on back with See ID. I've only been asked once in probably 15 years to show my ID (can't remember why the cashier asked for card, probably the card machine was only at the register). This is because most stores have the card machine where the customer is the only one that has possession of the card. The only reason to hand over the card is if the cashier asks to scan card, check signature and swipe card. The process of checking out has eliminated the timely task of this part of check process.

That's why it's necessary to safeguard customers and the DG brand from becoming a negative business to shop at. If people associate DG with shady business practices, then that will hurt consumer minds of the business. Simply asking customers to pay in cash for certain stuff isn't a problem and customers will know ahead of time if they're loyal & honest customers to bring cash. This will spread to the unwanted customers that buying GCs with stolen CCs isn't going to be easy and isn't wanted at DG.

All that takes place and doesn't slow down the buy process or the que of people waiting to check-out. (Although cashiers counting money these days is something we may have to help aid with their math skills to get the correct amount back. 😄)

I used to get my cousins a year of xbl every Xmas but they changed that to something different now.

What combination of these cards would I need to buy for them to have one year of online service each?

They literally only play fortnight and maybe some form of halo. If there's one with fewer bells and whistles that's better for them.

Sorry I'm a Playstation guy and I only ever need to know this once a year.
Check with your cousins if their multiplayer games are free-to-play like Fortnite and Halo:Infinite. If so, they can play online without needing any subscription.

My DG always has accepted CC for purchasing the GC's, with no limits.
I stock up on cards that do not get any cheaper elsewhere, like Longhorn

Does MS have any sort of sale on GP memberships? Asking because if so it seems like it could be more advantageous to just buy the regular Xbox gift cards and then pick up game pass at a discount. Possible double dip?

ugh, scratch my comment above. Seems MS only sells monthly subscriptions for game pass so no double dipping possible with this gc deal.

I went to DG today and noticed that the in-store sale tag had the Game Pass Ultimate Card on the graphic. I guess that's a good sign that they're probably on sale, but I didn't buy one so I can't confirm. If anyone else bought one, it would be appreciated if you could post your result.
But yeah, the DG ad has been kind of a disaster. On top of only showing Core in the picture as you mentioned, the ad that was originally leaked said the Xbox cards were going to be 50% off. That was a typo/misprint of course, but I'm sure it got some people's hopes up.

Are these gamepass cards going to be doorbusters ?
Where I live people are not interested in Xbox. Maybe if there was gift cards for natty ice and cartons of reds.

Don't know how great a deal $24 a month is for XBL Ultimate. There have been cheaper deals recently. Unless they have a bunch of old stock laying around at the old price. Then that could be a better deal.
