A cell phone on the bars is no substitute whatsoever for a bike computer if you're trying to get metrics from sensors, turn by turn directions from offline maps of trails that wouldn't be on a traditional GPS, etc. It's a good option for some things (and I used one for quite a while), but it's simply not the same.

At the same price, just get the Solar. Same basic unit but the battery lasts longer if you've got the sun overhead.

I rather use a smart watch then one of the bicycle computers. Its more versatile and does much of what those bicycle computers does, and it also measures your heart rate.

It completely depends on what you're trying to do. If your purpose is recording the ride, then a smart watch works great. If you're using it for navigation, seeing metrics off a power meter, or any of the numerous other things a bike computer is built for, it's the right tool for the job.

It's annoying and possibly dangerous to have to take your hands off your handlebar to check stats while riding. You're right that you get heart rate measurements with the watch, but I wear a heart rate monitor for that stat.

I bought the 540 Solar several weeks ago at the same price.

It's a little annoying with the non-touch screen as you need to do a long hold on some of the buttons to get to some of the features. Wondering if I should have gotten the 840 solar.

I have a Garmin Dakota mounted on my handlebars. I get a solid 8+ hours of run time with 2 AA rechargeable batteries in it. I've even taken my Garmin GPS from my car one time when I forgot to bring my Dakota, I placed it into my backpack just to track my route and maybe review the trail whenever I took a break or reached a fork in the trail. That one easily lasts a full 2 hours with the screen on, I'm sure I can get it to last even longer if I turned the screen off or even hooked it up to a USB power bank.
