Yes that is true, but it is very easy to avoid them if you don't purchase much. they often have a ten cent or 25c offer for 'any receipt' scan as well as 10-25c offers on any specific item , like any strawberries or dog food or almond milk. As long as you have some kind of activity every few months, you're safe.
