I'll stick with my free Costco insulated bags. They give them free for putting your Costco membership on auto renew (go into the app, turn it off auto renew, then walk up to their desk and ask for it to be put on auto renew to get the free insulated bag).

How much better at insulating are these compared to the Trader Joe's insulated bags for $8.
the 20L seems like a good size for smaller road trips.

Can't say about durability or insulating properties. But I found information about the volume for Trader Joe's bag, it's 8 Gallons (30 liters).

If you want to just be utilitarian, the IKEA cooler bag for $4 and Walmart Ozark Trail cooler tote for ~$7 both work well and are of similar size. But this one is a lot easier on the eyes.

I have Trader Joe's cooler bags, IKEA cooler bags, eBags cooler bags, REI brand cooler bags, and earlier this year added HydroFlask cooler bags...out of all of them HydroFlask was the priciest, but in many ways you really do get what you pay for. The HydroFlask bags are my favorite in terms of looks, durability, and they really do keep things colder for longer (e.g. functionality). I can load them up super heavy and I don't even worry about rips or breaks in the straps or fabric because they're so well built. I use them to bring lunch to work, grocery runs, and packing snacks for family outings. My Trader Joe's and IKEA bags are still around, but these days just more for carrying things that need extra cushion.
That said, I got my 32L and 20L HydroFlask bags on sale as well. I might be more critical of them if considering them full price. But when on sale, the HydroFlask cooler bags won't let you down.

The Ozark Trail works fine for keeping drinks and ice cold for the better part of a day. Its sealed like most cooler bags so you can keep an ice-water-cans mix without leaks.

The IKEA bag has foil lined foam, making it also good for keeping things warm. I'm not sure how well the seams at the bottom keep water in - I use it for grocery runs, not as a cooler bag.

The Hydroflask bag has better design than the Ozark Trail - stays upright more easily, more comfortable handles. If it keeps things any cooler, it would be marginal over the course of an afternoon where you'd be using it. Also it's not ugly. Just a small luxury if you bring drinks around often.
