There are advantages to doing this with ATT instead of Verizon.

1. After buying the phone in Walmart, you can pay off phone via ATT online chat. For Verizon you have to go to a store.
2. ATT activation fee can be voided instantly from the bill by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" when the bill arrives even if it's more than 3 days from activation which will mostly happen if you ship it to your house.

3. ATT version can be instantly unlocked using eSIM swap. It's YMMV but for most people it works if you follow the instructions below and do the transfer of the eSIM properly from iPhone to another phone.
4. Even if the eSIM swap does not work I have seen some getting the phone unlocked by chatting with CS once the phone is paid off. That also is YMMV

Sim swap instructions

1. There are two timelines for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. But as mentioned earlier that fee can be voided instantly by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" in the bill even after 3 days.

2. You can use SIM swap method method to unlock the device.

3. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the eSIM. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then transfer the eSIM to another unlocked phone. Make sure you are transferring the eSIM without making a new one so no ATT involvement. Reboot the other phone, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.

4. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ (in incognito mode) and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of iPhone nd submit an unlock request using a different email, phone number, name etc not associated with the ATT account.

5. Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.

6. ONLY CANCEL THE LINE AFTER YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PHONE. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK IT ANYMORE.

Edit: Forgot to mention you will have to try the SIM swap roughly 24 hours after paying off the phone. The unlock portal syncs with the billing system every night or so.

Not started yet. I don't like gc promotion because you have to pay tax on the full amount.

Thank you for posting this deal! Is the following correct?

1. Order the iPhone 16 online to take part of this deal
2. Once phone is delivered, activate the phone and place a test call
3. Call Verizon or log into your Verizon account to pay off the phone and cancel your service within 3 days of activation
4. Receive the $500 walmart gift card
5. iPhone is unlocked after 60 days despite not paying for a Verizon plan at all

Today I purchased the phone at Walmart, and tech activated the phone and placed a call. I received gift card within 5 min. Next I went to Verizon store to pay off the phone, but the agent said that I cannot pay off here. I need to either call Verizon customer service or go to Walmart to pay it off. The instructions posted here was to pay it off at Verizon store using cash. What a I missing here?

Yes, only correction is pay off the phone at store in cash and then call customer service to cancel the line.
Does paying in cash meant physically cash? Does debit card work?

Then you cannot cancel the line and it might change your current line plan.

Unless you have a lot of free times and have nothing to do, I would not recommend it.
After paying it off early you can always cancel a line but the commenter is with verizon and wants to be with them going forward and this purchase does not require a specific plan.

You might have to go to another store. Some stores won't accept cash, some store will send you a link to pay which you can pay using credit cards. It depends on the store also the manager if the employee does not know.

Some stores can't take any card so that's why cash is mentioned but then again some store won't accept it. From previous deals, some stores would send you a link from the verizon system for paying which can be done using credit card. It's better to talk to the manager anyway

Thank you. I was ready to pay either in cash or card but the verizon store agent said since I bought this phone at Walmart I cannot pay it off at his store. Can I call customer service to pay it off?

You can do eSIM swap, I think some did it with iPhone 14 WM deal that you posted before. You transfer the eSIM from one phone to the other line a pSIM
What's the process for Transfer the eSIM to an unlocked iPhone 13 with ATT? The community notes you referred to doesn't have the specifics. Is this confirmed working?
I did it with Xfinity Mobile (unrelated to this) by doing "Add eSIM" and "Transfer from nearby iPhone" from the unlocked iPhone. I can't recall if I needed a QR code issued by XM to scan and activate. Is it similar procedure with ATT, and do we depend on ATT to issue a QR code?

Google Verizon corporate store around you. Verizon authorized resellers won't allow you to pay off. Did you go to an authorized store?

All, thats why I said , pay as much down payment at store and leave minimum to pay off at Verizon store.

I left only $1 , then walk into the store and say ,

"I am paying off my phone so my line be ready for Black Friday deals and I can upgrade because Verizon generally give gift during that week".

I used same words and he took the payment with out any issue. Also on their IPAD , you can show , there will be CASH option , then they have to use for buyout.

PAYOFF can only be done at CORPORATE STORE not AUTHORIZED STORES

If you running out of 3 day window it's better to do it with ATT as you can get the activation fee voided as one time courtesy. You can still do the SIM swap before cancelling the account that way. Did you mean S24 deal? Yeah you can use the same account. I don't think they care when you are paying off my phone but many stores don't have a way to accept a card so you have to pay by cash and some might not want to take a lot of cash (one other way ATT is better as you can chat and payoff using credit card)2. You can call/chat but you have to within 3 days window for the activation fee voided. Do note both with ATT and Verizon they will send a bill with activation fee and full months bill which you have to talk to them for cancellation refund etc.
Does the 3 day window start counting when the iPhone is shipped or when it's delivered to your home?

Having trouble understanding the best path forward for an existing AT&T customer. Anyone here buying the phone who already has an active plan? Do I need to upgrade to a certain plan?
Same here. We still need to pay for 2 months of service AND a new line with its activation fee as far as I understand it. After the 2 months, we can then cancel the new line and pay off the iPhone in full and move it back to our existing original line. That means we're going to incur about $120 (2mo of service) and $40 activation, plus whatever sales tax if my math is correct. Im wondering if there is any way around this extra expenditure.
