1. After buying the phone in Walmart, you can pay off phone via ATT online chat. For Verizon you have to go to a store.
2. ATT activation fee can be voided instantly from the bill by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" when the bill arrives even if it's more than 3 days from activation which will mostly happen if you ship it to your house.
3. ATT version can be instantly unlocked using eSIM swap. It's YMMV but for most people it works if you follow the instructions below and do the transfer of the eSIM properly from iPhone to another phone.
4. Even if the eSIM swap does not work I have seen some getting the phone unlocked by chatting with CS once the phone is paid off. That also is YMMV
Sim swap instructions
1. There are two timelines for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. But as mentioned earlier that fee can be voided instantly by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" in the bill even after 3 days.
2. You can use SIM swap method method to unlock the device.
3. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the eSIM. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then transfer the eSIM to another unlocked phone. Make sure you are transferring the eSIM without making a new one so no ATT involvement. Reboot the other phone, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.
4. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ (in incognito mode) and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of iPhone nd submit an unlock request using a different email, phone number, name etc not associated with the ATT account.
5. Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.
6. ONLY CANCEL THE LINE AFTER YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PHONE. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK IT ANYMORE.
Edit: Forgot to mention you will have to try the SIM swap roughly 24 hours after paying off the phone. The unlock portal syncs with the billing system every night or so.

This looks good if you are Tmobile already; what is the catch
If you look at one of the eligible iPhones at walmart.com and click the SEE DETAILS button to see the terms & conditions for the $500 walmart gift card (Special $500 eGift Card with purchase See Details) you should see the following:

So it looks like the same or a very similar deal will be available starting online on November 24th for W+ members!!!
Hopefully the Event02 deal is also for iPhone 16's because in previous years the offer would be a gift card for either specific iPhones or specific Samsung Galaxy etc phones…for this deal I've so far only seen iPhone 16s having this deal…no idea if they're doing a similar deal for Samsung androids or not…hopefully that's not the only thing available for Event02's version of this deal.
According to Walmart Corporate Return Policy Page: https://corporate.walma
Under the Exchange Only Items pulldown:
[Exchange Only Items:
Some products if opened or used can only be exchanged for an exact or similar item as follows:
Unlocked opened wireless phones within 14 days*.
Drones, Projectors within 30 days*.
Air beds/air mattresses within 90 days*.
Durable medical equipment within 90 days* (e.g., crutches, walkers, slings, mobility scooters, pulse oximeters).
Funeral products: (e.g., caskets, coffins) can be exchanged within 90 days if damaged or defective and unused. New or used items are nonrefundable unless the return is due to manufacturer defect or damaged.
*New, unopened items can be returned for a full refund.]
I personally think that that might be a big reason for the in store Walmart associates wanting to open the phone boxes so badly…to prevent a full refund from being able to occur/possibly messing up their commission…
I, of course, could be wrong; but the phone boxes obviously don't need to be opened to activate the ones that are being shipped out to customers…
If anyone is successful at refunding their opened box iPhones to Walmart please let me know how it goes…I personally think that making sure both Walmart and the cell phone carrier list the refund/you're not on contract anymore is going to be very difficult…but good luck!
Imo, instead of trying to refund it to Walmart you guys might want to first contact AT&T support (maybe through the chat box function at att.com so you can take screenshots of the whole conversation and to have a reference number for this particular chat), and you could make up a story about how you unexpectedly got some holiday money early from family members (or that you got a bit of a bonus from work) and were wondering if you fully pay your AT&T phone off right now can it then be fully unlocked instead of having to stay on a higher tiered AT&T phone plan for 60 days?
You could even act like you might want to jump on a new holiday deal that AT&T might still offer during this holiday season (ie maybe you'll buy a whole new phone from AT&T if your current phone gets unlocked ASAP without a 60 day wait time)…
or maybe act like you want to just take your brand new phone over to AT&T prepaid since they're like $30/month compared to $60+/month for AT&T postpaid Unlimited plans…
just a few random ideas…
Good luck guys!

So I placed 4 separate orders. It looks like they did 4 separate "soft pulls" on my credit - one for each phone.
Any tips on how to consolidate this into one account when I get the phones? All are in my name with the same address and PIN code.
They haven't shipped yet, but fingers crossed!

I believe that a Verizon POSTPAID phone policy would be what a phone contract (like this deal) would be under.
Do you happen to know if that's still possible?
