There are advantages to doing this with ATT instead of Verizon.

1. After buying the phone in Walmart, you can pay off phone via ATT online chat. For Verizon you have to go to a store.
2. ATT activation fee can be voided instantly from the bill by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" when the bill arrives even if it's more than 3 days from activation which will mostly happen if you ship it to your house.

3. ATT version can be instantly unlocked using eSIM swap. It's YMMV but for most people it works if you follow the instructions below and do the transfer of the eSIM properly from iPhone to another phone.
4. Even if the eSIM swap does not work I have seen some getting the phone unlocked by chatting with CS once the phone is paid off. That also is YMMV

Sim swap instructions

1. There are two timelines for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. But as mentioned earlier that fee can be voided instantly by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" in the bill even after 3 days.

2. You can use SIM swap method method to unlock the device.

3. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the eSIM. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then transfer the eSIM to another unlocked phone. Make sure you are transferring the eSIM without making a new one so no ATT involvement. Reboot the other phone, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.

4. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ (in incognito mode) and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of iPhone nd submit an unlock request using a different email, phone number, name etc not associated with the ATT account.

5. Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.

6. ONLY CANCEL THE LINE AFTER YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PHONE. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK IT ANYMORE.

Edit: Forgot to mention you will have to try the SIM swap roughly 24 hours after paying off the phone. The unlock portal syncs with the billing system every night or so.

Not started yet. I don't like gc promotion because you have to pay tax on the full amount.

Thank you for posting this deal! Is the following correct?

1. Order the iPhone 16 online to take part of this deal
2. Once phone is delivered, activate the phone and place a test call
3. Call Verizon or log into your Verizon account to pay off the phone and cancel your service within 3 days of activation
4. Receive the $500 walmart gift card
5. iPhone is unlocked after 60 days despite not paying for a Verizon plan at all

Not after you pay off the phone

Ordered VZ version on 14th Nov with expected delivery date of 16 Nov, however, now it shows delayed to 23 Nov.
The fact that line is already active, should I just abandon this deal altogether OR should I cancel line by calling now and then pay off phone once I get it after a week?
I'm worried if I do that then there won't be a line activation in the first place and it won't start the 60 day unlock clock.
Yes you worry is correct, you need to activate the phone on Verizon network to start the 60 day clock and you can't do that on a cancelled line. I am also not sure if you can pay off a phone on a cancelled line either so I suggest wait for the phone to arrive and pay the activation fee. You have 30 days buyers remorse to cancel the line with Verizon.

You can use SIM swap, see my pinned post to unlock it right away. ATT policy states device must be paid off and 60 days wait not active service. However, ATT unlock portal is finicky and does not follow that policy so you might have to talk to a CS to get it unlocked.

Thanks for your quick reply!
So I can still cancel beyond my line being active and I'll just lose the activation fee of $40?

My experience today:
- the Walmart rep initially told me that a price chart sent to them with all the models and carriers showed the 16 Pro being $799, but the system shows $24.98x36=$899.28. Couldn't do anything but to go with what the system has. I guess they jacked up the price for the promotion.
- lowest plan available was Value Plus VL $60.99.
- initially forgot to tell him I wanted to down pay, but I remembered in time before he submitted the order. He had to delete and re-add the device, and the screen to enter down pay showed up. Lesson: DON'T FORGET to keep telling them that you want to down pay, so they don't miss this screen! Esp. if you're doing Verizon.
- that page actually showed the max I could down pay is $863. I ended up paying $860 on CC, leaving $39.
- Once the payment was processed, I received email for the $500 Walmart eGC within 2 min!

- Got home and finished setting up the ATT account. Needed to log out and back in for the line to show up
- Once it showed up, the Payments page has "Your installment plans". Clicked into that and paid off the remainder with CC. No need to fight with store rep! Because of this, for ATT it's unnecessary to down pay at Walmart, esp if you have CC that gives more points for telecom.
- initially encountered issue with iPhone's quick eSIM transfer, as the new phone didn't pickup the transfer request from the old unlocked iPhone. This was solved by setting the device passcode on the new phone.
- then followed the rest of the instruction from @gadgetNerd and unlocked without issue. New phone now has "No SIM restrictions". As @gadgetNerd mentioned, I only waited until after 1am to do the unlock, not 24 hrs after full device payoff.

Time to think about if I want to do this again, or wait for Event 2 :-P

I'll deal with cancelling the line tomorrow or so, and fight for bill credit later.

If I didn't wait 24 hours after activation to do the eSIM swap (I eSIM swapped my AT&T line an hour after activation to my unlocked iPhone 14) will this cause issues with my unlock on the AT&T iPhone?

Got a 16Pro and 16 ProMax on Friday in store with AT&T. Paid both off both devices same day via app. I used $500 gift card to get the second device and got a second $500 gift card immediately after purchase. Was able to unlock both devices using eSIM swap 24hrs later. Will probably get two additional devices today, Sunday, and will cancel both lines first thing Monday
