There are advantages to doing this with ATT instead of Verizon.

1. After buying the phone in Walmart, you can pay off phone via ATT online chat. For Verizon you have to go to a store.
2. ATT activation fee can be voided instantly from the bill by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" when the bill arrives even if it's more than 3 days from activation which will mostly happen if you ship it to your house.

3. ATT version can be instantly unlocked using eSIM swap. It's YMMV but for most people it works if you follow the instructions below and do the transfer of the eSIM properly from iPhone to another phone.
4. Even if the eSIM swap does not work I have seen some getting the phone unlocked by chatting with CS once the phone is paid off. That also is YMMV

Sim swap instructions

1. There are two timelines for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. But as mentioned earlier that fee can be voided instantly by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" in the bill even after 3 days.

2. You can use SIM swap method method to unlock the device.

3. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the eSIM. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then transfer the eSIM to another unlocked phone. Make sure you are transferring the eSIM without making a new one so no ATT involvement. Reboot the other phone, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.

4. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ (in incognito mode) and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of iPhone nd submit an unlock request using a different email, phone number, name etc not associated with the ATT account.

5. Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.

6. ONLY CANCEL THE LINE AFTER YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PHONE. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK IT ANYMORE.

Edit: Forgot to mention you will have to try the SIM swap roughly 24 hours after paying off the phone. The unlock portal syncs with the billing system every night or so.

Thank you for posting this deal! Is the following correct?

1. Order the iPhone 16 online to take part of this deal
2. Once phone is delivered, activate the phone and place a test call
3. Call Verizon or log into your Verizon account to pay off the phone and cancel your service within 3 days of activation
4. Receive the $500 walmart gift card
5. iPhone is unlocked after 60 days despite not paying for a Verizon plan at all

you did esim swap before paying off phone and that worked? shouldn't we pay off first and then do esim swap?
When I completed esim swap, ATT account still showed iphone 16 pm. After few refreshes, it finally showed my unlocked iphone 11.

Has anyone actually/successfully rolled the $500 Walmart eGC into another iPhone purchase?

Since you can't infinitely roll the eGC, how are you all liquidating the eGC into cash?

I can't speak to online purchases, but I did roll my 1st gift card into a second iPhone purchase in-store today. Bought two 16 Pro Max on AT&T. Activated/put down payment on the first phone. About 2-3 minutes after purchase was finalized, and while I was still in the store, I got the 1st $500 e-GC in email. Then went through activation/purchase again for 2nd phone and was able to use the 1st e-GC to pay $500, and the other $600-something I put on CC. For the 2nd $500 GC, I'll probably just buy something high-value + rarely discounted and resell it for cash on FB Marketplace. I'm sure others may have better insight on cashing out the gift card(s).

A few people posted that they used the first 500 gift card in store on a purchase of a second phone. Obviously this isn't something you can do if you buy online since it takes 2+ weeks to get the email delivery of the gift card for online purchases.

Thank you for sharing your experience and I would probably do something similar, reselling something in high demand but OOS on facebook marketplace. As long as I break even or make a small profit of $50 - $100 I'm good with that.

Having purchased several post and prepaid iPhones from Walmart via OSL [oslrs.com], I always prefer buying in person vs online. Assuming you're dealing with someone who is competent and reasonably ethical, the process should be smooth and they are highly incentivized to sell and activate phones with postpaid plans.

has anyone done esim swap from iphone to android and can share steps without ATT involvement? i googled steps to swap to android but that seems to involve getting QR code from ATT.

Is the online status accurate or it's better to make a call to the store? It shows OOS in all stores near me.

Argh, bought two phones on ATT... with one phone i got the device unlock email with request link immediately, sent it in, and it was approved 1 minute later - phone unlocked. Phone number 2 says it sent the unlock email with request link and it was never received, not in spam, any other category or quarantine. I guess I have to wait the 24 hours and then submit again?

I tried the chat bot and it basically said as much, do they not have live agents in their main site support chat?

I signed up for a new account and am ok losing the phone #. I just want to be able to pay off the 899 for the phone so i can get it unlocked in 60 days. was planning to cancel verizon account, how can they stop me from cancelling? and how would porting out the phone line help me pay off the phone? would i still avoid the activation / first months monthly fee? sry for the questions, just feeling a bit lost & ive only made it through the first 10 pgs of comments, planning to look at the rest in a few hrs to see if i can get any additional insight. thanks!
Thats depend upon rep to rep , both in WM and VZ. While signing up at WM , they have option to put down payment. I took 7-8 phones in past and never had issue doing down papyment and left $1 to pay at VZ.

Could you please advise how the porting out works? Any recommendations on porting out? Once ported out wait for 30 days to pay off the device? Feeling a bit lost
Use any prepaid carrier sim like H20 wireless. They do not need to even recharge before porting. Just go to VZ account , take account and transfer pin and give to H20 for port-in

I tried today buying at WM and OSL said they can't take any downpayment.after long chat he said if i cancel before 14 days your GC will be gone. Also called Verizon if i can pay off device within 3 days and rep told if you do it for 36 months plan then i would loos any promotion. I'm confused if I buy this on WM without any downpayment can i pay off at verizon store? and cancel line in 3 days and would be able to retain $500 GC?
I can also trying talking OSL and putting downpayment and leaving $1 for verizon and cancel line in 3 days won't invalidate $500 GC?
Nope. GC cannot be cancelled once delivered to your email as you have made the purchase. It linked to successful activation but not how long you keep the line.

Can port-out be an alternative to the "cancellation with the ATT"?
ATT helpline holds are very long. ATT store couldnt help cancel my line.

Thanks for your great help, I have few questions, So if I'm unable to pay off the phone, because I actually tried with 2 corporate stores and both asked me to wait 30 days, should I port out before the 3 days period? Is this going to save the first month service fee? Will I be only charged the activation fee? Will the phone be unlocked after 60 days if I did this?
