It's not silly, it's chip binning. They are the same silicon but due to defects not every chip can be a Pro. So they have to manufacture enough of them over time to maintain supply.

I think they're actually waiting on other hardware supply issues, new ones are supposed to have OLED screens, finally ditch the notch, etc.
I bet nobody would complain about the notch if it had FaceID.
Took them 11 years to catch up with windows fingerprint unlock. 11th anniversary of the first Windows laptop I had with face unlock next year. Should happen in a few years
