I would recommend the newer steelbox 4K remaster from Crunchyroll over this funimation version. It's also on sale: https://store.crunchyroll.com/pro...11150.html

Are there any major differences in this one vs the crunchyroll one besides the steelbox cover?

Are you sure this one isn't the latest 4K remaster (by Funimation/Crunchyroll)? The major difference is HDR. Funimation (now Crynchyroll) isn't one of my favorite companies, but if this version (on sale at $11.99) has HDR, then that's the latest one. (You will miss out on some of the extras, I think. I forgot what they dropped for the 4K remaster with HDR)
If someone can confirm this is the one with HDR, TIA.

Great price, and highly recommended for those who haven't seen this absolute masterpiece. However, it sure seems like there have been a lot of different AKIRA releases over the last 5+ years. Just an observation, I suppose.

As long as it has the original audio from the 80s. IDK why they recast it.
It's weird hearing english VAs say "Canada" instead of "Kaneda"

It is a bit of a style over substance case (cinema du look), oh but what style. They knew how to make good anime back then (I'm not even that old really).

The Funimation version came out in early January 2022 before the merger and if you get an old print it could not have HDR. Theres no longer a way to request a replacement disk either. The Crunchyroll steel book came out later and guarantees HDR

lol I feel the same. Even though there are some weirdly translated lines in the original dub, I still prefer it. I believe either release has both English dub tracks so that's not an issue as far as I can tell. Crunchyroll does however have the original 2.0 Japanese audio track where the dialogue level is perfect - only the import versions had this previously

Edit: I must be mistaken as I don't see the 2.0 Japanese track listed on either. I could have sworn it was added back in

I've heard both dubs and the one I remember best is the Streamline version (starring James Flinders/Cam Clarke as Kaneda). Aside from some pronunciations, some of the lines are different, more accurate in each version in separate parts. The one that sounds off to me (non Flinders/Clarke) has somewhat better lines in places, I think two that stick our is Tetsuo's like about Kaori when she's in him, and the other I think was at the beginning from Kaneda when they were being interrogated.

Anyway, this movie is one of the best anime films ever made. Whatever the version you listen to, the visuals are an heavily stylized and visually stunning. The story isn't for everyone, but this was one of my favorites. Great OST as well.

Truly good anime came to a close shortly after GitS: SAC... sometime in the mid-late aughts.
