The RT-BE96U stands out as a high-end WiFi 7 router with strong range, fast speeds, and solid stability, especially in AiMesh setups. Setup is described as straightforward through the Asus web interface, and the router's 4x4 tri-band design, two 10Gb ports, and built-in AdGuard Home add real flexibility. Real-world reports include whole-home coverage in large houses and smoother gaming and streaming after upgrades. Main caveats are its large size, lack of SFP+, some early firmware rough edges, and ongoing Asus security concerns that make firmware updates important.
Common Questions (5)
$310 is described as a strong price for this model, especially versus earlier lows around $370. Alternatives mentioned include the RT-BE88U for lower cost without 6GHz, or Ubiquiti gateway-plus-AP bundles that can land in a similar price range depending on the features you need.
Setup is generally straightforward through the ASUS web interface, and plug-and-play use is easy. Tinkering features like AdGuard Home take more work, but firmware updates and Merlin have improved early issues enough that one owner described the router as stable and excellent after updates.
Yes. It can be used as the main router in an ASUS AiMesh setup with wired backhaul, and one setup paired it with older ASUS ZenWiFi ET-12 Pro nodes. A Wi‑Fi 6 XT8 node was also specifically asked about for wireless backhaul, so compatibility with mixed ASUS mesh gear is a practical concern.
It can cover a large house well, especially with AiMesh. In a 2,800 sq ft, 2-story, 5-bedroom home, one unit plus a wired-backhaul second unit delivered about 20-30 Mbps in the weakest far rooms and 400-500 Mbps on phones nearby, with iPhones reaching over 1 Gbps within 20 feet through walls.
It has two 10Gb ports, one for WAN and one usable as LAN, but the remaining Ethernet ports are 1GbE rather than 2.5GbE. That makes it a better fit if you need 10Gb uplinks and are willing to add a switch for multi-gig devices.

Vulnerabilities can be patched.
Instead of just scaring people based on a YouTube video you saw, maybe provide specific details on the issue and suggest an alternative product.
GN weren't being alarmist, just fact-based reporting and reminders to keep firmware updated. OP was the one being alarmist and it seems they only read the headline or didn't understand that GN brought up this vulnerability as more of a PSA that they could fit into an Asus video that was mostly about mobo issues.
this is in contrast to TPlink routers in which current in-production models have vulnerabilities and are likely to be banned by the US government in the next year: https://www.cnet.com/home/interne...-the-risk/
Currently have ATT Fiber 2.5gb plan for internet and soon will have Race 10gb internet.
As far as wireless speed goes… it's about as good as it gets. My farthest bedroom Apple TV gets about 150mb/s while a phone in the same room will consistently reach 400-500mb/s. I hardwired the Apple TV so it will get about 930mb/s consistently.
iPhone 15's and 16's will reach over 1gb/s within 20ft and through walls.
Before I got the second one, I had ASUS RT-BE96U in AiMesh mode with 2 Asus ZenWiFi ET-12 Pro's as AP nodes. I tested the ASUS RT-BE96U as a standalone before I created the Mesh system. At the weakest areas, with the router in a central location, I was able to consistently receive 30 - 50 mb/s.
I tested the speeds by changing location of the router. Even when I placed a single ASUS RT-BE96U on the ground floor of my living room, the WiFi speeds I would consistently get on the farthest 2nd floor bedroom was 20-30 mb/s… but YMMV
Setup is pretty simple using the Asus web interface. There is an app, but Instructions will warn you to set up with a browser first before using the app. Setting up 2 using AiMesh was also super easy.
Someone was mentioning lack of 2.5gb ports… ok… but it has TWO 10gb ports. One for WAN and the other as a LAN port. You can buy 2.5gb switches from $30 to $60 depending on how many ports and some will have 1 or 2 10gb ports (usually SFP ports).
I have a 3, 2.5gb switches and also few 1gb switches connected to these. Most of my devices (eg Apple TV, PS5, etc) at best have a gb Ethernet port so no need for a 2.5gb port. I have a couple computers hardwired with 5gb adapters that consistently receive 2.3+ gb/s.
The 2.4ghz band is super strong for all my devices like light switches. I put those in a guest network.
How I have my stuff wired…
ATT modem 5gb port connected to a 10gb SFP+ port on a 10 port switch. 2 ports are 10gb SFP+ ports.
The other 10gb SFP+ port to the main ASUS RT-BE96U 10gb WAN port. The 10gb LAN port hardwired to the other ASUS RT-BE96U 10gb WAN port.
The 2.5 gb ports on the 10 port switch hardwires the rest of the rooms with various 2.5gb and 1gb switches in the rooms

Did the price go up? Still a great deal at $310 but it was sweeter at less than $300....
