Bought one last night before this was posted. I had it sitting in my cart from the last time it was at this price. I delayed the purchase because I wanted the longer return period in case something went wrong with this 1040. I don't need one but I wanted one.

This year, left eye took a dive and I see @%&.Many peeps report liking the bigger screens, guessing because the 800 & 500 series that are "fine", all of a sudden are hard to read. Wants and needs become literally blurred. Not calling you an old geezer, but...

Copped. The Edge 1050 is $700, so getting last year's (or two years) model for $400 seemed like a good deal. Replaces a 530. I'm looking forward to the larger screen.

Pretty good deal but I would hold for a possible $500 1050. The screen on the 1050 is a lot better than the 1040. It makes a big difference. 1040 also is slower and slightly laggy compared to the 1050. Many people online state the 1040 feels quite dated now, but the features it has are still top notch, its just the user experience that doesn't feel as smooth. You don't need the solar either unless you're bikepacking or something. If you're already gonna spend $400+ on a bike computer, you might as well get the newer one that's easier to read and isn't slow.
I seriously don't understand the compulsion some people have to post in these threads about using their phone. What is that about? This tool is not for you. Why does this require a comment?
Also the 540 solar is $250 direct from Garmin for anyone like me looking for a bike computer upgrade that is more budget friendly.

I get the frustration but I too am trying to understand. What does this do that a phone and garmin smartwatch can't? I'm an avid mountain biker and am just trying to gauge what I'd get from this. Thanks in advance for letting me know!
better battery/longer uptime than phones. better interface for cycling.
more bluetooth/ANT+ connections for sensors/devices that range from power meter, heart rate, speedometer, cadence sensor, radar, and lights.
cyclists using those sensors are the ones who use one of these. it's ok if you don't need it.

Phone lasts 6-8 hours and my watch out performs this. Pass waste of money but keep these for the sillies
You're probably a multipurpose path cyclist that probably does 15 miles out and back max and that's ok. For those that are either doing centuries/bikepacking consistently or are doing interval training, getting accurate directions and/or proper heart rate measurements which connects better to the computer will get great use out of this without killing phone battery or shortening phone life with all the shaking/sun exposure.
