I get the frustration but I too am trying to understand. What does this do that a phone and garmin smartwatch can't? I'm an avid mountain biker and am just trying to gauge what I'd get from this. Thanks in advance for letting me know!
Tbh probably not great for mountain biking - it's great for directions for long trips or if you're doing interval training since it can connects best to chest HR monitors to make sure you're on target for training.

Respectfully, just google or reddit "why do people use bike computers?" Or for that matter, look at literally any other SD thread for one of these, where half the posts are the same exact question. It's exhausting. People who cycle long distances, competitively or for a hobby or camping or whatever, greatly benefit from these devices over phones, and it's good to be able to discuss these deals because the devices are expensive. If you don't need the device, just keep it moving.
This is a good deal, for a Garmin 1040. I personally went with the Corus Dura as it's a much better value and does almost everything the 1040 does. Battery life on the Corus is 3 times what the Garmin is.
I seriously don't understand the compulsion some people have to post in these threads about using their phone. What is that about? This tool is not for you. Why does this require a comment? Also the 540 solar is $250 direct from Garmin for anyone like me looking for a bike computer upgrade that is more budget friendly.
I think some people live pathetic unfulfilling lives. They somehow think showing complete strangers online just how much smarter than everyone else they are, validates their superiority complex. Common teenage boy mentality that some people don't grow out of unfortunately.
For those that have access to Expert Voice, this is currently on Flash Deal for $299.
You are the true hero of this thread! Thanks for this tip! My wife works at a school and they give you an extra $20 coupon to sign up! $280 for a 1040 GPS is super SLICK!
The $399 price has been reached for a few times this year. I think it need to be $350 at year end, given the age of the device.
If you really want it and believe the price will be lower by year end, buy it today and return it next year. If it isn't at your price, at least you still have one. Otherwise, you may be waiting forever and possibly not even get one. If your price target is 350, then I understand, you don't want one. I have been in situations like this before. You could also return it next year if it never reaches 350 and decide you don't want one.
Good idea! Seems like we're in the year end extended return windows now.

why is this more expensive than just using a phone?
The reason for many cyclists is that it provides metrics and data that most apps on a phone cannot. For instance, it will provide information on electronic shifting, maps that provide much more data and better at routing on a bike and also provides information (combined with a compatible tail light) about vehicles that are behind you. Also, it's built to take a hit without a scratch at 20+ mph. There are many other advantages, but these are just some to provide some insight here. 😁
