Reminds me of the good ol' days when I had a Kenwood Basic M2. 8 Ohm: 2x 220 W RMS (20Hz - 20kHz, at 0.004% THD). You can still find them on eBay. For 2 channels it's a beast of an amp.

The 5100 surpasses Emotivas Basx5 deal for $519.

If you have no preference, this is pretty good deal imo.

Running a 5.1.2 energy RC system in a large room, driven by an Onkyo rz-50 and wondering if I should go with a separate amp.

If you're looking to improve the SQ, very unlikely, it would make much of a difference.
Maybe if you listen at ear piercing levels, even then it wouldn't be a significant difference imo.

What's a good 3 channel option?

I agree with supermanrob. In virtually any surround setup, it quickly turns into a Charlie Foxtrot when trying to integrate a discrete amp and achieve any sort of continuity. In my humble opinion, that money is better spent on a higher caliber of integrated surround receiver.

Some of the best receivers I'm aware of are Sony's flagship ES series. They're pricey as hell but have a loyal following amongst the audiophile crowd, and some very special design elements like old school transformer power supplies and heavy rigid beam chassis. Secondipity has certified refurbs of 3 ES models, and will likely do a 20% off Black Friday sale any day now.

The Onkyo is a year old, I'm sticking with it for a while.
