The X8 was a standard m.2 when shucked but this one is storage soldered onto a PCB with a usb c connection. It is not the tiny m.2 they could have used.

Cost-cutting measure. It's the same annoying reason WD makes portable disk drive with USB connectors directly instead of using a SATA-to-USB bridge. It's less parts to make/buy/assemble. Great for them, but annoying as hell for all us shuckers. V_V
