Looks like only the upgraded i7 variant with aluminum chassis can charge via USB-C. Lamest design decision ever.

That's indeed silly. Is there a deal with the i7 variant?

I have a refurb latitude and it charges voa usbC, so i assumed most newer ones did as well.
