do they have to use specific microSD from Nintendo to work? Or non-specific to Nintendo would also work? Just asking since non-specific to Nintendo usually a lot cheaper?

For the switch 2 you have to use a Micro sd express. The card will have "EX or Express label on the card

They don't have to be Nintendo branded, but they do need to confirm to the new-ish Express specs, of which there aren't many options. I think the cheapest that will work is Walmart's Onn brand (which I think I read has slightly slower load times but is otherwise fine).
