Soft case is preferred if you are putting it in a vehicle. Hard cases rattle around and make noise while a soft case is much quieter.

At least they include a case - and like another commenter states, it's better to have a soft case for a car so stuff doesn't rattle around as much.

...my 32pc ratcheting wrench set from them came in a big plastic tray that isn't really suitable for storage. Takes up way more space than it needs to.

I have a older craftsman set like this. Its great to toss in the car as a emergency kit. Doesn't take much space and won't rattle much. Add a screwdriver or two (yes it has bits), a couple different pliers and a crescent wrench and its a decent kit.
