From the most recent reviews looks like they still haven't fixed the connection dropping all the time.

Been keeping my eye on this model as I want one but they haven't fixed the connection issues after many months, starting to think it's a design defect.

You NEED to install asus-wrt merlin for this router.

It's not the hardware. Asus software engineers just used to serve noodles before this job.

For netgear or asus, the first thing you do is check if merlin supports the model, because you will need it eventually- if not immediately. Their in-house firmware team are not in mensa.

yup! I too recommend the Merlin firmware.

If this is stable on Merlin, and is tri-band, It looks to have the same amount of memory as the Zenfi ET8s i have. What's not to like

Merlin
Tri-band
10Gbe WAN/LAN
2.5Gbe WAN/LAN
2.5Gbe additional 3 LAN ports.

$200 dollars.

I sure wish Asus offered the BE88U as a tri-band option and stand up design.

This is tempting.

Installing Merlin fixes the issues with dropped connections etc.? I find it weird that ASUS messed up the firmware so drastically for this specific model.

Looking up this router on Reddit shows many negative comments about the router. But I suspect most of those folks are not using Merlin firmware (probably just stock ASUS firmware).

Merlin was a bit of a long delay for this router if I recall. I didn't even know it had come out. Must have happened in the last 90 days or so.

do you know of any asus routers that could go on sale in the $100 range that are good? Like most people, I wouldn't need one of the $200, $300, $400 level ones, but even at the $100-150 range I want to just be sure it does NOT have issues such as those drops. I use barely any devices and not a huge home so don't need one of the crazy expensive ones. My blue cave broke is why I need something, though...

They don't just mess it up for this model. They are pretty good at fking up half their products at any given moment. They like humping software until it's so bloated and pointless that they forget what it's actually for.

A new beta was released yesterday. Last stable was August 3. He releases stables once all the supported models hit a similar set of code. So, don't be scared of 'beta'. This guy works different. He kicks back half the stuff asus sends him until it's coherent across models.

As far as choosing a router, whether it's this one or another- work backwards. Look at the firmware first. That's how your router will either live forever or die in a year. But if you have your heart set on 'wifi 7' on the cheap, like this, keep in mind that you can always revert back to the original firmware and send it right back to amazon. No love lost. It's as easy as uploading a file. Because that's what it is.

Personally, I bought the Flint 2 yesterday on a BF sale. Open firmware and horse power mean more to me than wifi 7, that half your devices can't use. If I had a chub for wifi 7, this is probably the router I'd get. Development is just ramping up. People are happy with it. It's going to be supported for a decade. And if it shits the bed, amazon is pretty good about returns.

Excellent. I'll keep this router on my "save" list for when I upgrade to WiFi 7.

Great info, thanks for sharing these links. Makes me optimistic about this router. It's a killer deal at around $250 but a router is worthless if it can't work reliably.

Sounds like a fantastic developer. Great to hear. I'd heard of Merlin before but never considered it. I have an ASUS XT8 mesh system now, using stock ASUS firmware. It works very well now, but it sucked the first year of ownership due to crappy ASUS firmware bugs. Yes, I probably should have tried Merlin back then. Will definitely keep it in mind it in the future.

I'm not following this statement - "Look at the firmware first." How do you mean? Review firmware release logs to see what is broken/being fixed, or do you mean see if Merlin is available for the router before deciding to purchase? Or something else?

The Flint 2 looks good, but I noticed it is made by a company in Hong Kong (very close to China). Will you be using the stock firmware, or wiping the firmware that came on it and installing OpenWRT? Are you concerned about any "backdoors" because of the router's origin?

I don't think you'll have any issues with the Flint 2. The Flint 3 is another story, though. Seems to be underpowered and not sure how well that will work with OpenWRT, if at all.
