These 9V rechargeable batteries are best suited to low drain devices like smoke detectors, TENS units, voltmeters, sprinkler controllers, and other occasional use gear. The low price makes repeated recharging cheaper than buying alkaline 9V batteries, and the lithium style packs are described as holding voltage better than NiMH. The main concerns are capacity and longevity, since the 200mAh rating is viewed as very small and some expect short runtime. Charging compatibility also needs checking, though standard 9V chargers may work with the built in cutoff.

  • The batteries can be useful for low-demand devices like smoke detectors where long idle time matters.

  • The batteries can retain a near-9V reading for much of their discharge cycle due to boosted or regulated voltage design.

  • The 9V rechargeable batteries can work for a TENS unit when a compatible charger is available.

  • The batteries may be rechargeable with standard 9V chargers because built-in charge limiters can cut off when full.

  • The NiMH 9V capacity is described as too small and prone to self-discharge, limiting practical usefulness.

  • The NiMH 9V voltage can read around 1.2V to 1.5V after recharging, which can make many 9V applications unreliable.

  • The batteries may not last long in higher-drain use, with expectations of failing within months.

  • The listing and returns can be problematic when the wrong item arrives and the listing changes, making correct replacement difficult.

these are nice for the older programable sprinkler controller that have a 9v backup battery, not sure if this is a good brand or not though.

Perfect for my TENS unit. Now I need to find a charger for them. For the price, a couple of charges beats expensive 9v alkaline batteries.

I bought this one because I also needed AAA batteries and ebl is a known brand.

I went with these, 4x for $9 with S&S, lithium instead of nimh, who knows what the real mah is, labeled 1100, one tester said 800, one said 400, but either way, they're probably more than double the nimh 200 mah:

thanks, i thought surely there has to be reasonable option, NiMH or Lithium, with a built in charging port

How many people actually have charger for 9V NiMH? I also don't have any application for 9V rechargeables, which has a much smaller capacity than alkalines. If this is Li-Ion and charged using USB, I would be interested.

Be aware, since these are lithium, there are 2x small pouches in there + electronics. Each fully charged is 4.2v (maybe...likely move like 4.1+/-v). So it might top out at 8.3-8.4v fresh.Being lithium it will sustain that voltage pretty well. I have a bunch of this kind of battery and they do OK..
No way are they 1100mAh. At best, maybe 600.
I have a few EBL of this type [eblofficial.com]. Claim to be 600mAh, They did go 560mAh @0.2A draw when brand new. 3 years later are more like 400-450mAh. They have not been used hard, just in water leak detectors that notify me when they get low, so they don't got completely dead.
They DO go for months, no problem
NiMh > pathetic.

i also suspected it was just 2 cells in series as that comes close (enough?) to 9V but amazon reviewers claimed testing them at like 9.2V. can't recall if they were loading them though. but maybe there's electronics to raise the output voltage?

I have opened up a couple different brands-2 pouches + electronics panel. The 'math' for 8.4v works out for that. Putting 3 pouches in there and then using a conversion drive to bring the voltage down to 9 volts would work but the complexity and resulting big decrease in capacity don't work out economically.
I think people are having issues with their voltmeters (If they actually have them), or their veracity. There are LOTS of crap reviews on batteries, and considerable ignorance on how this kind of lithium conversion cell works.

makes sense, thank you

i think i'm mistaken in assuming electronics to raise voltage are as simple/cheap/efficient as those that lower it (like in lithium 1.5v AA size)

The electronics that are in a 8.4v are just over/under charge limiters. Some of these (most?) you actually don't need a special charger. Many 'standard' 9v chargers will charge them fine and the built-in electronics cut off when full.
IF you try that put them in a fireproof spot and watch carefully, monitor frequently the first time. (Works on my 2 brands, but that's a small sample.)

Voltage increase/decrease both need even more space robbing electronics, increase complexity (more probable failures), and WILL add heat, which is a problem for all these kind of batteries.

NIMH 9V battery is garbage , I recall the output is actually 7.2v, it is total useless for most 9v application

Older post but the topic came again for different HW 9V rechargeable batteries. These ones are Li-ion.
I have some older EBL Li-ion and it's exactly like you said. 2 pouches x 4.2V when freshly charged, goes to 2x3.6V in weeks or months at most. Not enough for smoke detectors. Capacity around 400-600mAh.
However I think the newer ones sold on Amazon such as the HW 9V Li-ion rechargeable have a single larger pouch and voltage booster/regulator. That's why people are measuring 9V constant. It will keep 9V for most of discharge cycle then drop to something like 1V suddenly. Similar to AA Li-ion that keep 1.5V constant.
