How easy is it to install roms on this? I want a reliable retro device that can play some ps2 emulation
Look up Emudeck. It's a comprehensive solution for emulating just about anything on SteamOS, and it's really easy to install. As the other commenter mentioned, there are tons of good YouTube videos that will guide you through the installation.

Oh man $490 with tax open box near me. I'm happy with my steam Deck but this is tempting
I made the leap to a ROG Ally Z1E a couple months ago, and I find it hard to go back to my Deck OLED (still can't part with it) when the Ally plays everything so much better above 15w. If you play AAA games, the Deck is really falling behind. A perfect example of this is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which runs like garbage on the Deck, even at 720p/800p. I'm able to play it on my ROG Ally at 900p and still get 30% better framerates. It goes from being a barely unplayable mess to a satisfying experience. The Deck also has a forced preset that "fades" objects out of existence very quickly, making everything look fuzzy. The anemic Zen 2 quad core really holds the Deck back with emulating too, with Z1E's Zen 4 cores being much better performers.

Every time someone touts the Steam Deck's performance at lower 10-15w levels, they do it with games that didn't need the wattage to begin with. But if you play less demanding games or emulate only up to PS2 levels of games, the Deck is fine.

Logitech g cloud is fantastic for streaming. Why? Battery life. You can literally game all day with it.
The issue is that while its super light and built well, its not really that good of a device. The thumbsticks are close to the face buttons and can interfere. They also tend to have drift, which I got on two units from Secondipity. The screen is good but the latency from streaming is 3x worse than an x86 handheld, and my PC isn't even plugged in.

I got it around $150 refurb on sale and was unimpressed with 12ms latency, so I sold it. Picked up a Steam Deck mainly for streaming from PC for heavier titles and local play for indies and its worth 2x the price increase. Can finally tackle my backlog + emulate everything + stream every incompatible Windows game at 3-4ms. its a shame since the G Cloud has good potential but Logitech needs to put a better WiFi chip and processor in it, especially since it was overpriced af at MSRP.

This one is pretty solid but its significantly more expensive than LCD Deck. Whether thats worth it is up to you.

This or rog ally x?
Basically:
ROG Ally X 🫤
  • Smaller 7" screen
  • Less RAM (24gb)
  • Lighter and smaller overall (I didn't like holding it.)
  • Better battery life IIRC
Legion Go S 😍
  • Bigger 8" screen (Need for my old eyes)
  • More RAM (32gb)
  • Way better ergonomics and so comfortable to hold
  • Heavier and larger overall

You can dual boot windows and steam OS. There are tutorials online if you are comfortable flashing the system.

Got this for my birthday last month for full price, $900 plus tax. It's worth it.

My only complaint is that the RAM stays at 512MB even when choosing Auto or 16GB. Waiting for Lenovo to fix that.
Regardless, it works fantastic.
You must must must get Lossless Scaling app from Steam for about $8.
If you don't know what that is, Google it. For handhelds it's just a must.
Lossless Scaling is currently on sale on Steam for only $3.49 !

I only play FromSoft stuff like Dark Souls, Sekiro, etc. Would this app make it smoother?

Ordered an open box excellent for $505 + tax and used the PayPal Pay in 4 20% cash back promo. Hopefully it's actually in excellent condition when I pick it up tomorrow.
Open Box Excellent may have gone up slightly in price, it's now showing $531.99 for me but this is still a fantastic deal. I might pick one up.

Do these devices play any Steam game?
This unit runs SteamOS so it will not be able to run certain games like Destiny or Battlefield 6 that use the Windows kernel for their anti-cheat. It should be able to run most anything else with tuning to the settings and some FSR.

Anyone has experience with original Legion and Legion Go S with Z1 Extreme? Aside from the screen size, refresh rate, and the redesigned body, not sure what the major difference between the two.

Also, anyone know if it was easily to backup SteamOS? Might need to install Windows as more games run on Windows.

LOVE my GCloud. Streams everything from the cloud at solid bitrate with no perceived latency. Moonlight, Steamlink, PS Remote Pay, XBox Remote Play, Xbox GamePass. Nvidia. Native Android games and Netflix Games also work great for any games that are controller enabled. Its nearly as light as a Switch with battery for many hours. Being Android, you can also watch any streaming service or use it as a mini tablet. Also has video out, if you are on vacation to hookup to a hotel TV. Only caveat, to get the best experience, is you need both excellent internet down/up speed AND superior wifi5 broadcasting jn-house when gaming.
