Yes, I will call you crazy and say that you're missing a LOT of things.

A tablet+bluetooth for joysticks and controls is not the same as a full handheld device.

This is a complete device that you can pick up and play with, then put away. It is EXTREMELY more portable.

Why would you want to hack together something and then use a TV or a monitor to display it? The whole point is that it's portable and compact.

This isn't a solution to replace PC gaming or console gaming. So you need to stop looking it through that type of lens.

They're really close overall. The extra 8GB of RAM is nice to have for games, but at the detail levels and resolutions you'll be playing these games at, you'll find it hard to actually use more than 24GB. If you use the handheld for more than just games or you massively over-allocate VRAM to the GPU, you can certainly use more than the 24GB in the Ally X, but should you?

Moving from 16GB to 24GB is a big improvement for UE5 games like Star Wars Outlaws, in particular, as it's VRAM and system RAM hungry, and will happily gobble up 8GB allocated to the GPU, and most of the remaining 16GB system RAM. However, I'm not aware of any other games that have that kind of demand, so YMMV. An open-box or used Ally X will set you back around $600-$700, so this new Legion Go S is definitely a good price.

The 32GB in this Legion Go S is more than adequate for 99% of gaming situations outside some kind of massively modded game that gobbles system memory, like Skyrim SE with a billion mods. My final vote goes to this Legion Go S because it natively supports SteamOS, which is still the preferred PC gaming OS unless you play things that require kernel-level anti-cheat. That's basically competitive shooters, currently. (last I looked, Rainbow Six Siege, Apex Legends, Fortnite, most modern CoD games, Valorant, etc) If you prefer or require Windows on the handheld, I have a suspicion this doesn't include a Windows 11 license, so if you loaded Windows onto it, you'd either have to deal with the watermark or buy a copy of Win11.
Right. There's a really simple reason why 32GB RAM is not useful in a handheld: no current game consoles have more than 16GB total (ok technically 18GB on PS5 pro). Therefore even after statically allocating 8GB to VRAM it's not really possible to need more memory on current gen titles, many of which are already straining handhelds for other reasons.

I have had one of these a few months and love it. The Z1E is a nice upgrade over the standard Steam Deck and Steam OS is a dream to use compared to Windows. Very easy to use with games from GOG and Epic. Xbox is out though accept for streaming through the cloud.

call me crazy but can't you just buy a PC and a tablet for less money and install steam on the tablet and game that way?

I got my PC for

234 + 50 + 115 - 40 = $359

I got 32GB of RAM on facebookmarketplace and 2 TB SK Hynix Platinum P41 SSD (50 + 115) and sold my old RAM for $40.

And this tablet for $253....

or a smaller tablet...

and now we need joystics. I think the price is very close. Perhaps I am missing a monitor but you can use your TV for the mini PC.

Not going to thumbs down because there's a couple things you're missing here.

First major thing missed:
SteamOS is running Linux and inside it's an x86 chip. You pointed to an Android tablet, so you're already in the wrong architecture. This is for PC gaming. While SteamOS isn't 100% compatible once a game does work, it runs 10-15% better. This is also why these two versions are the best bang for buck machines you can find. The better comparison would be pointing to laptops or mini PCs because the Z1 Extreme is essentially a 7840U and the Z2 Go is a cut down 6800U and anything comparable in a mini is going to cost at least $250, in a laptop at least $450. Bear in mind that because it's running SteamOS it runs better than expected, the Z1E version is within 10% of its successor in this and the Z2 Go is within 10% of the Windows versions of the Z1E.

Second major thing missed:
Portability. Even if you get a mini hooked up to a half decent monitor or use the laptop, it's just not the same as being able to reach over and play a game, or taking it with you on the go. I've got a desktop already, this device isn't going to replace my PC. It will, however, let me play most games on the side. I don't need to worry about monitors, I don't need to worry about hinges or space, it's just there.

Third major thing missed:
Due to the fact that it's on an x86 chip and not Android it's significantly better at emulation. PS2 era, PSP, handhelds up to and including the Switch (even the Steamdeck could run Switch games better than the Switch), all aren't a problem. So even if you do eventually hit a wall with PC games it's not like this collection is going to go anywhere.

Personally I went with the weaker model, the Z2 Go, because after discounts, certs, and Paypal it'll be for under $300 net. There is nothing remotely close you're going to find around this price point. Yeah, it's less future proof and has less storage but it's only about 10-15% weaker while costing 60-70% of what the stronger variant is so I'm okay with that. To those who went with the Z1E, it's as good a deal you're gonna get on something stronger and 32GB is definitely "safer" in the future.

i tried z2 go. the 8" screen was quite in my face when sitting on couch stretching legs or lounging on a chair and resting the device on my upper stomach. The fps swing was wild for arkham asylum and just cause 3. For just basic movement, swing was like 40-55,60 fps. Granted i was on windows, but i have never known windows to fluctuate so much. Gave me butterflies in stomach. I am trying out steam deck oled now. screen is very very nice. its 7.4 inches and not in my face. fps in bioshock was solid 60. ergo wise both felt same. if anything, i liked the more separation between bumper and triggers on the Go S. Was not happy with them being so clicky and cheap though. Need some refinement.
i think, decide based on the games you want to play. If you have backlog like me go try steam deck. if you have no backlog, you are playing newer games. Hence go with these Z1E handhelds. Within Z1E, there is choice of 7", 8" and 8.8". 7" 1080p screen is small. that makes the handheld smaller too.
8" can be sweet spot for you. you just have to try it out. It would be nice if steam deck was updated with Z1E. Personally, i have backlog. i want to play arkham series, bioshock, divinity 2, bg3, cyberpunk, fear series, some ps games like god of war, horizon dawn, spiderman. they all run decently on steam deck oled. So i am inclining towards route of enjoying these games on a nice OLED screen vs getting something LCD with some more fps.

Just picked up an open box good for $511. Sometimes it pays to give lower condition ones a shot. The comment was for minor scratches and it's a few around the usb-c charging port and that's it.

If there were scratches on the screen I would have an issue but getting at $511 in basically pristine condition outside the above is great!

UPDATE: very nice, the biggest disappointment by far is the speakers. for a near $1000 device retail, this is a travesty. will have to debate whether to keep or not

Amusingly, that's very much so a Windows "feature." By and large the Z2 Go is the Steamdeck with a higher TDP. Similar chips, very similar outputs at 15w on every level, the main thing is it can go up to 30w and compete well above its pay grade. The Z1E just muscles through stuff with twice the cores and better hardware but it also needs that because of the OS. Steam is just way more efficient, the Z1E here performs nearly like the latest Z2E machines on Windows so you'd be more than fine.

Yeah. SteamOS is nice. The right way for handheld. My problem is that the oled screen is so nice. Have been spoilt by oled. Lcd never looked bad to me. But I just didn't quite feel it with the go s like I am with the steam deck oled.

Picked up my Z1E 32gb open box 'excellent' condition today at lunch. There were two small scratches on the screen, which should knock it down to 'good'. I asked the woman at the pickup desk and she said she could knock it down no problem. She was going to return it, drop the grade and then have me rebuy, but I didn't want to chance the PayPal deal not working so asked if she could do it without a return. She played around a bit and then dropped the price to $449 and refunded the difference. Already got the notification on refund through PayPal, the rest is unchanged.

Super slick! Ymmv. Thanks again op!

Perfect timing... I had been looking for a steam deck sale this season but this seems to be an okay substitute. In for 1 open box "Excellent" at $525 + tax. First time using Pay In 4, but 20% is too strong to pass up.
