It does come off, but should be treated like cast iron. It is a seasoned cook surface, and dishwashers will strip the seasoning and likely cause rust.

Just FYI, I have the Blackstone version of this. Yes, it's small. But it's perfect to take camping and just throw on the picnic table, or for tailgating if you're tight on space. We've made full breakfasts for 20 people on it, you just have to work in rounds. We've also done steak tacos, lobster rolls, and so much more. Just be warned that yes it's a small surface, and wind will definitely have an impact. If space is an issue, this is great. Otherwise, I'd get a two burner.
