About this Film:
  • When an American air raid kills their mother in the final days of World War II, teenager Seita and his younger sister Setsuko are left to fend for themselves in the devastated Japanese countryside. After falling out with their only living relative, Seita does his best to provide for himself and his sister by stealing food and making a home in an abandoned bomb shelter. But with food running short, the siblings can only cling to fleeting moments of happiness in their harsh reality.
  • Based on the personal accounts of survivor Nosaka Akiyuki, Grave of the Fireflies is hailed as one of the most stunning contributions to animation and cinematic history. Deftly depicting the beauty of the human spirit as well as its devastating cruelty, Grave of the Fireflies is a singular work of art from Academy Award-nominated director and Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata.

I think the worst approach by people is to think this as a whimsical "ghibli" film. If you can get over that hump then its a tragic war film you can appreciate from the pov of the japanese which is quite rare.

Great for an uplifting movie marathon combined with stuff like A.I., The Road, Old Yeller, Where the Red Fern Grows, etc.

Yeah. Only time anime nearly made me weep. Maybe two other movies in my whole life I feel so strongly about seeing only one time. A fantastic, but very tough film.

This is the saddest movie I've ever seen. It hit hard! GoF puts life into perspective.

Does the land before time count, or is that too uplifting in the end?

Great White Elephant gift to prank your friends with. Amazing but one of the saddest things I've ever seen.

This is the saddest movie I have ever watched in my life. It will depress and traumatize you, but you have to watch it once. Just once.

The Road is somehow rewatchable. I've watched it 4 or 5 times. Grave of the Fireflies is a one and done for me.

Me. But, once per year at most and more like every three to five years.
