The TCL QM8K stands out as a bright room TV with strong daytime performance, and the 4K panel is the real resolution despite the model name. It is often described as a step up from the QN90D for bright spaces, with very good picture quality and an impressive sound system. The main caveats are weaker dark room performance than OLED, some reports of blur, humming or buzzing at high brightness, and the ARC port not being HDMI 2.1. It looks like a solid fit if your room has a lot of light and you can work around the audio setup.

  • bright-room daytime viewers because commenters say it's awesome for bright room daytime viewing and is marked as better than the QN90D/most others for bright rooms.

  • people choosing between a TCL QM8K and an OLED specifically for daytime use because one commenter picked the QM8K over an LG G4 OLED flagship and said they're very happy with the purchase.

  • buyers who want a big-screen value deal and plan to use a Prime card because one commenter got 5% back on the $897.99 deal and called it awesome.

  • shoppers comparing this TCL to an LG C5 who are deciding based on price drops because one commenter said the price drop on the "8K" (plus 20% PayPal cash back) made the TCL a "no brainer."

  • home theater setups that route audio through a receiver because commenters say they prefer plugging everything into the receiver for cleaner cabling and easier input switching when they have many HDMI devices.

  • people with a soundbar plus a single 2.1 gaming device who can use a workaround because one commenter suggests putting the soundbar on the ARC port and the Xbox on another HDMI port to get sound and 2.1.

  • dark-room viewers expecting OLED-level black performance because commenters warn that an OLED like the S90D is best in a dark room and that even small ambient light can raise blacks to grey.

  • buyers who need ARC to support HDMI 2.1 for multiple 2.1 devices because commenters say the ARC port isn't 2.1 and that it's a problem if you have multiple 2.1 devices.

  • buyers who care a lot about built-in audio quality because commenters say the audio is average and they bought a Sonos Arc instead (spending more on the soundbar than the TV).

  • people who want to use the TV's built-in audio without any external routing and don't want to deal with HDMI workarounds because commenters describe frustration with the lack of 2.1 on ARC and note there's no other way to fix it besides an external part.

  • people sensitive to TV noise at high brightness because one commenter reports humming/buzzing at high brightness and says it's a dealbreaker for them.

  • buyers who want to avoid TCL warranty hassle because one commenter advises not to go through TCL warranty service after experiencing a difficult "nasty run around."

QM6K that I set up last night for $499 is good enough for the majority of people looking at this size T.V. It has blown my socks off so far.

I was between this and the LG C5 65. The price drop on the 8K was the deciding factor. Unless the C5 comes down significantly by next Monday this seems like a no brainer. Plus I got 20% cash back through PayPal for choosing the 4 payment option. At least I hope they don't screw me somehow.

You are right but - Word of warning - the S90D is definitely best in a dark room but only a small amount of ambient light will DRAMATICALLY elevate the blacks on the S90D. Blacks will become grey. All this love of inky OLED blacks? Gone.So if you have a window with the sun pumping light into your room ( not even directly on the TV) think twice. You might not be getting the OLED experience you think you are.
Dont know why there is a thumbs down but its a sound advice.

Why not use hdmi1 for 2.1 and then EArc (hdmi4) for sound only? That's the way I am doing it on the k6 model. I run my Xbox x and Apple TV directly into the TV and then hdmi 4 is for sound only going back to my receiver which fully supports all Dolby sound settings and I can use any remote such as tv or Apple TV remote app to control it all. Also before I hooked in my stereo I was able to turn tv on and off without hdmi 4 in the loop so sync works on all hdmi inputs.

i prefer to plug everything into my receiver, it just keeps things so much cleaner with less cables going up to my tv.
Also its way easier to physical plug in things to a receiver than it is to a wall mounted tv.
on top of that i do have more than 4 hdmi devices (7 including receiver) and swapping inputs via just the receiver instead of both receiver and tv is more convenient.

that said you make a good point. Its probably going to be a year or 2 before i upgrade to a 2.1 receiver and there is no point dwelling on it now.

Can't agree more. I was looking at 8k/7k or c5/s90f but got 6k pro from Costco and its been phenomenonal. I don't think I need to spend any more. No doubt the others tvs are better but the law of diminishing returns kicks in. Also Costco 5 year warranty makes it sweet. Paid $426 including tax the best TV I ever had...

Well this is frustrating, I have this tv on the way and did not realize the arc port was not a 2.1 port. Why did they do this? My years old Hisense has 2.1 on the arc. Which is farking great because it lets me use my device remotes to control the audio.

im guessing its a lot more common to use a sound bar with arc than it is to use a receiver with arc and hdmi passthrough.
This is definitely a response to the vocal users that hated having to waste a 2.1 port on a soundbar, no longer being able to get 2.1 on say ps5 and xbox at the same time.

sad because there's a $20 external part to fix that and no way to fix this

Put your soundbar on the arc port and your Xbox on another? You will get sound and 2.1

Reports of humming and buzzing at high brightness kind of kills this one for me unfortunately.
