Not really. Function wise it's about the same. The app is neat if you wanted it but I don't use it. The thing I like the most with the R8 is the mute button on the front instead of the side.

Could never understand buying these. Especially for the price. Waze is all you need. In fact most people who use these are holding up traffic.
They work where Waze doesn't. Like when they are driving against traffic. Mine has saved me too many times to count.

Just buy the r8. Resale values on Uniden radars are always solid. Plus the Uniden 8w is compatible with laser jammer hardware upgrade. Supposedly that is suppose to trickle down to the R8 as well.

I bought and cancelled the R8 since I guess they pulled support for laser jammers. So spent the extra $50 for R8W. The R8W does WiFi updates and will support laser jammers.

I'm coming from an R7; I wouldn't bother with the R8, but if you want WiFi updates and laser jammers support, get the R8W.

They backtracked on the laser jammer thing. they will add support for it

I bought this exact deal from Amazon Resale a few months ago prior to a road trip. The unit looked brand new in the original packaging and works like a charm. Great deal! Make sure you go on YT and forums to do a deep dive on how to adjust all of the settings.

Waze relies on people to mark police locations. If you're the first one down the road to notice him, it's useless. Doesn't work on patrolling police vehicles either. I view Waze as supplemental to a radar detector. It in no way replaces one.

It's been a long time since i researched these so this info might be incorrect now, please chime in if so, but my understanding with laser is if goes off due to an officer hitting your car with a laser speed detector, it's already too late, as the reading that is on their laser gun is essentially instant. So I'm not sure that laser detection is helpful, other than to tell you you've been clocked. Also unsure if this is still the case but cars that use laser for dynamic cruise control used to set these off like crazy.

Unless your running a jammer then yes, you have been clocked. Most users will be hit by radar most of the time. As they say, one tickets equals the purchase of this unit. Plus most users will run waze simultaneously. For rural roads where there are fewer drivers and so the effectiveness of waze as well. Highway traveling waze is great.

These are a tool to understand your current situation. You can use it properly and get lots of benefit or use it wrong and screw things up.... But to assert Waze is all that is needed demonstrates a lack of understanding. Waze is just another tool that help you understand your current situation.

If you have a positive hit for laser, it is very likely they clocked your speed. Whether or not they have a clear idea it's you isn't always the case in heavy, multi-lane traffic. They will often then pace you to confirm it was you. If you slow down with being alerted, you might avoid a ticket. Again, having your speed on the laser doesn't always mean they can 100% say you were the vehicle they had locked onto. All that said, assume you are getting a ticket when the laser goes off and slow down and prepare for the stop.
Laser use is very state by state dependent. Some states don't use X-band. Some states use all bands and all systems and lots of red-light cameras and photo radar. The addition of GPS to these have helped mitigate those dangers along with Waze. Lots of tools to help keep you informed.
Most of the cars that have automatic cruse control distance keeping use radar. That was a big problem for the radar detectors when they started, but most of the false signals due to those systems have been filtered out by good DSP. Laser doesn't appear to be as big of a problem, not that it doesn't happen.
