I think it's probably too much power for him, but I could probably figure out a way to limit the max speed setting. I did the same with my ebike controller.

Thanks for your response, that's what it looked like in the photos as well but I just wanted to double check. I was thinking of getting this for my 10 year old for christmas, who is 4'5" right now.
