But if you think you'll want more/higher quality ui cameras than what it can support, then you'd have to look at splitting the gateway and access point(s)
Ubiquiti is very much like Apple - they have an ecosystem that plays nice with each other, so you can manage everything from the same place, versus having to manage each part of your network individually. You do pay up front for that convenience though.
Community Reviews
The UniFi Dream Router 7 is a compact all in one gateway that stands out for easy management, Wi Fi 7, and a built in PoE port, making it a strong entry into the UniFi ecosystem. It is praised for stable wired performance, simple VPN access, and room to grow with access points, cameras, and other UniFi gear without a subscription. Coverage is solid for smaller to mid sized homes, but range can trail stronger Asus or mesh setups, and larger homes may need extra wired access points. It also has a learning curve and limited camera capacity, so it fits best when you want UniFi control in a modest setup.
Common Questions (5)
It is a strong home all-in-one if you want UniFi's controller, VPN, VLAN, camera, and ecosystem features in one box. It is less compelling if you only need basic routing and Wi‑Fi, or if you already have a solid router and do not plan to expand into UniFi gear.
It is reported to cover about a 2,500 sq ft home, but UniFi's design philosophy is "more, better placed" rather than maximum radio power. For larger homes, adding a wired access point at the opposite end can improve coverage and total bandwidth.
If you already have APs, the Cloud Gateway Fiber is the better fit because the Dream Router 7 includes its own Wi‑Fi 7 AP. If you already use an NVR, the Cloud Gateway Fiber plus a separate AP is also a cleaner setup than relying on the UDR7 alone.
The UDR7 includes a Wi‑Fi 7 AP and one PoE port, while the Cloud Gateway Max uses an M.2 SSD instead of microSD storage and has a slightly stronger processor with support for more connections and cameras. The Max is the better pick for camera-heavy setups; the UDR7 is the simpler all-in-one option.
Yes. A UniFi access point can be temporarily plugged into the UDR7's PoE port for setup, then moved to its final location and powered with a PoE injector to join the network as mesh.

U6+ AP's are alright too
Is this better than the cheaper Cloud Gateway Max?
I have a couple of UniFi APs and small switches in my network that I run from a UniFi controller app. No plans to add UniFi cameras. Would I be able to ditch the app if I have this router?

-Includes a Wi-Fi 7 AP and 1 PoE port
-Has a slightly lower processor, supports fewer connections, fewer hd/4k cameras
-Uses micro SD for storage, versus m2 SSD in the Max

I plan on adding a doorbell and cameras down the line, so I needed the storage and the higher camera support of the max 👍
