If I'm just vacuuming strictly cold ash (I'm talking days between fires) is there any reason I can't just get the HEPA filter for my shop vac? Ridgid makes one for mine.
Not exactly. My understanding is that this is designed for vacuuming ash without needing to wait for any fire danger to subside. The canister is metal, as well as the hose and pre-filter. Especially useful for people whose primary heat source is wood burning.

I can almost assure you you need to wait for the ashes to get cold. The filters can still burn. It just comes with some heat resistant stuff. Your mostly buying a HEPA(ish) filter more than anything.

Item #11 on the do not do list in the manual, "11. Do not pick up anything that is burning or smoking, such as cigarettes, matches or hot ashes"
