The WD Blue SN5000 1TB is a budget Gen 4 NVMe SSD that looks attractive for spare storage and everyday use, with the 2TB version described as fast and solid. The price history suggests this deal is lower than recent jumps, and the per terabyte cost is still seen as reasonable for the speed class. The main caution is a Windows 11 24H2 HMB issue on the 1TB when used as a secondary drive, which can misreport space until a registry change or firmware fix is applied. PS5 compatibility also looks borderline on speed, so it fits best where bare minimum Gen 4 performance is enough.

  • PC builders adding a secondary NVMe drive, because the drive can work normally once the Windows HMB setting is adjusted.

  • Gamers needing a PS5-compatible spare drive, because its PCIe Gen 4 speeds are close to the console's minimum requirement.

  • Desktop owners wanting a fast Gen 4 spare, because the 2TB version is described as fast and good to keep around.

  • Windows 11 24H2 users adding it as a secondary drive, because it can misreport capacity until the HMB registry setting is changed.

  • PS5 owners expecting comfortable headroom, because its stated read speed sits below the console's 5,500 MB/s minimum.

  • Buyers who want a drive with a clean reliability track record, because one unit can suddenly die after normal use.

Why buying to keep it in a drawer ? The price hasn't changed since September, it's not a black friday deal, so why not buying when you need it ?
I bought the 2TB for $109 earlier this month when I saw that prices were going up. $55 per TB for this speed gen 4 is a good enough price for me to keep around as a spare.

Would this work for a PS5?
The minimum required sequential read speed for an M.2 SSD for a PS5 is 5,500 MB/s.. this ssd read speed
5,150 MB/s

Latest update from Sandisk for this 1TB WD drive.
Not exactly a fix without user intervention. Again, this happened to me when added as a second drive in a system.

"Thank you for contacting SanDisk Customer Service and Support.

I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to reach out and thank you for your patience and for providing all the helpful information during our troubleshooting process.

I'm pleased to confirm that the issue you were experiencing with the SSD was not related to a fault with the drive itself. Instead, the problem was related to the HMB Allocation policy in the registry settings, which controls how the drive uses system memory for caching.

By setting the HMB Allocation policy to 2, we were able to allocate 64MB of memory to the drive, which allowed it to function correctly and efficiently. This setting resolves the issue and ensures that the drive works as expected without any conflicts or misreporting of its size.

Thank you once again for your cooperation and for providing all the necessary details to help resolve this matter. We truly appreciate your effort and understanding."

That's my question too - they didn't really fix the problem, just confirmed what I already knew - if Win11 isn't happy with the drive, you can fix it by making a registry edit. Apparently this problem is affecting Phison controllers, but not all of them as other manufacturers have figured out how to not have this problem.

I believe the WD HMB issue was resolved quite some time ago with a firmware update. I never saw a satisfying conclusion to the other problem you mentioned. It was supposedly affecting a wide variety of configurations, many of which did not use Phison controllers. Phison did claim to find a problem, but it was only with a beta firmware that was never meant for public release. All the other players involved seemed to just sweep it under the rug. I'm not entirely convinced it was a widespread issue, as most of the reports seemed to come from one source.

It can't be a widespread issue as Sandisk would have already put something out about it. I suspect most folks use it as their only NVME drive vs adding it as a secondary, and it must not have a problem in that configuration.
