Come to find out Windows 11 starting with 24H2 has an HMB issue for this drive and the 2TB version. If you add this 1TB as a secondary drive with win11 24H2, beware.
A registry change limiting HMB buffer size to zero or 64 MB is the fix.
I put in a ticket with WD/Sandisk and they are investigating

The WD Blue SN5000 1TB is a budget Gen 4 NVMe SSD that looks attractive for spare storage and everyday use, with the 2TB version described as fast and solid. The price history suggests this deal is lower than recent jumps, and the per terabyte cost is still seen as reasonable for the speed class. The main caution is a Windows 11 24H2 HMB issue on the 1TB when used as a secondary drive, which can misreport space until a registry change or firmware fix is applied. PS5 compatibility also looks borderline on speed, so it fits best where bare minimum Gen 4 performance is enough.
The 2TB SN5000 reportedly worked correctly from the start with the latest firmware.
Sandisk support reportedly tied the Windows HMB misreporting behavior to a Windows registry HMB Allocation policy and provided a workaround.
The SSD can reportedly function correctly after setting the HMB Allocation policy to allocate 64MB memory.
The drive may be compatible with a PS5 because it supports PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSDs.
The 1TB SN5000 reportedly showed incorrect free space reporting, including reporting 2TB free but leaving the space unusable.
Windows 11 24H2 reportedly has an HMB issue with the 1TB SN5000 when used as a secondary drive.
The 1TB version reportedly has no updated firmware available, while support continued investigating the 1TB behavior.
The SSD may only meet bare-minimum PCIe Gen 4 performance for PS5 use based on stated read/write speeds.

5,150 MB/s
Not exactly a fix without user intervention. Again, this happened to me when added as a second drive in a system.
"Thank you for contacting SanDisk Customer Service and Support.
I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to reach out and thank you for your patience and for providing all the helpful information during our troubleshooting process.
I'm pleased to confirm that the issue you were experiencing with the SSD was not related to a fault with the drive itself. Instead, the problem was related to the HMB Allocation policy in the registry settings, which controls how the drive uses system memory for caching.
By setting the HMB Allocation policy to 2, we were able to allocate 64MB of memory to the drive, which allowed it to function correctly and efficiently. This setting resolves the issue and ensures that the drive works as expected without any conflicts or misreporting of its size.
Thank you once again for your cooperation and for providing all the necessary details to help resolve this matter. We truly appreciate your effort and understanding."

That's my question too - they didn't really fix the problem, just confirmed what I already knew - if Win11 isn't happy with the drive, you can fix it by making a registry edit. Apparently this problem is affecting Phison controllers, but not all of them as other manufacturers have figured out how to not have this problem.
