Sony WH 1000XM4 is a strong over ear noise canceling headphone with standout ANC, solid sound, and long battery life. The noise cancellation is especially effective on airplanes, for fan noise, speech, treadmill use, and even while plugged into the 3.5 millimeter jack. Sound is often described as full and fun, and the app adds useful control options, including turning touch controls off. Comfort is good for many heads and can hold up for long sessions, though the touch controls can be finicky and some find the fit snug or tiring after a few hours. Build durability appears uneven, but long term use has also held up well for others.
Common Questions (5)
Bose QC is generally more comfortable, while the XM4 can feel snugger and may become uncomfortable after 2-3 hours for some users. The XM4 is often described as having slightly better ANC, especially for fan noise and speech, though Bose is also reported as quieter by some. Comfort is the main reason to choose Bose; ANC and Sony's extra features favor the XM4.
At $159.99, it is still considered a strong buy for its ANC, sound, and battery life, with several long-term owners saying it remains worth it years later. One comment also notes that if Best Buy matches, PayPal 20% back can bring it to just above the all-time low.
Several owners report 5+ years of use with the XM4 still in great condition, while others say the ear cups can eventually rip with heavy sweaty use. The practical takeaway is that the headphones themselves can be durable, but the pads may need replacement over time.
Yes. The touch controls can be turned off entirely, which avoids accidental triggers from clothing and removes the need to remember the gestures.
Yes. The XM4's ANC still works when plugged into the 3.5mm auxiliary jack, so you can use wired audio without losing noise canceling.

How does the XM4 compare to the XM3?
1. I absolutely hate the touch controls. They're not intuitive. Maybe if I wore them every day I could remember what motion triggers which action, but I only wear them when traveling. They're also simultaneously too sensitive and not sensitive enough. The hood of my jacket can brush them and trigger some action. But if I'm trying to do something, nothing I do seems to register with them.
2. I can wear them for 2-3 hours max before they become uncomfortable. For domestic travel in The States it's usually enough, but during longer flights I have to take them off and take a break.
My wife and I own both of these and these are a pick 'em for either of us. "Way more comfortable" is hyperbole unless you ears/head are of unusual size or shape.
Without EQ, they have a moderately different sound profile (that can be EQ'd out) but we could swap these back and forth on long flights and neither of us would be bothered by it. I do prefer Sony's controls a bit more, but possibly because I'm more used to them.
The internet seem to be divided. Any personal nuggets?
In terms of functionality, Bose QC's have buttons, no touch controls or additional fancy features to tweak or control through app. Buttons are of high quality and are tactical. Sony on the other hand has much better functionality though their app and also support lossless music which is a plus. It all boils down to personal preference of user, if you want to keep everything simple to use and no need of additional features, go for Bosr QC. Otherwise, Sony XM4 are the best.
Personally I like the additional functionality and features and appreciate to be able to tweak as per liking and surrounding environment. You can't go wrong with either of those.
PS. Whichever you get, do check sound quality by listening to different kinds of music, especially ones with very high frequency/tones and with lower ones.. cause one I received earlier had sound in a steady plane and it was not catching tones on higher and lowers edges .

sound is way good enough for airplane or otherwise (fiddle with eq to taste)

Comfort is very subjective but they are both equally comfortable for my head size.

I'm not sure why but I spend more days on the xm3 but either one would be fine. Might be a texture preference the xm3s are a smooth plastic while the xm4 has a little roughness to it. But only an autist like me would notice. They are both fantastic and after several years I expected the xm3 batteries to fall off but I still only charge them every other day. The ear cups eventually rip and I'm on my 3rd set. I end up doing yard work and go outside with them on all the time so they get sweaty, too.
After trying different tiers of ANC headphones at various price ranges, I can say this is 100% worth it. I wouldn't bother with anything less after experiencing these. It's rare to say a single piece of tech changed my life so much and has stayed relevant for so many years. I can't say enough about these. They really changed my life. I'm the guy that's always trying to save a buck by compromising (example a 5090 budget but end up buying a 5060 TI) but this is one I wouldn't compromise.
