Sony WH 1000XM4 is a strong over ear noise canceling headphone with standout ANC, solid sound, and long battery life. The noise cancellation is especially effective on airplanes, for fan noise, speech, treadmill use, and even while plugged into the 3.5 millimeter jack. Sound is often described as full and fun, and the app adds useful control options, including turning touch controls off. Comfort is good for many heads and can hold up for long sessions, though the touch controls can be finicky and some find the fit snug or tiring after a few hours. Build durability appears uneven, but long term use has also held up well for others.

How does the XM4 compare to the XM3?
I've had both for a long time and in my experience they're essentially the same. If you can get both for the same price go for the XM4, if you already have the XM3 and they're in good shape it's not worth upgrading.

I have these. The ANC and battery life are exceptional. Two things I do not like about them: 1. I absolutely hate the touch controls. They're not intuitive. Maybe if I wore them every day I could remember what motion triggers which action, but I only wear them when traveling. They're also simultaneously too sensitive and not sensitive enough. The hood of my jacket can brush them and trigger some action. But if I'm trying to do something, nothing I do seems to register with them. 2. I can wear them for 2-3 hours max before they become uncomfortable. For domestic travel in The States it's usually enough, but during longer flights I have to take them off and take a break.
Same, I loved these until I lost them but they did hurt my head after like an hr. The new xm5s hurt my head too. I think im just going to be a earbud guy from now on.

You can turn the touch controls off. That's what I did.

Bose QC are way more comfortable which is the #1 priority for me
There's a reason why "the Internet" is divided on which is 'better' (more preferred). There's no consensus, as it depends on more subtle differences than blatant ones.

My wife and I own both of these and these are a pick 'em for either of us. "Way more comfortable" is hyperbole unless you ears/head are of unusual size or shape.

Without EQ, they have a moderately different sound profile (that can be EQ'd out) but we could swap these back and forth on long flights and neither of us would be bothered by it. I do prefer Sony's controls a bit more, but possibly because I'm more used to them.

This or Bose QuietComfort for $169?

The internet seem to be divided. Any personal nuggets?
Bose all the way. They have better build. I have had mine for several years now. The sony sound great but build quality is poor. They usually start breaking apart after a year, sometimes sooner.

Great product, use it everyday for last couple of years (since lucking out on the Target $129 price error a couple of years ago); still going strong and would easily recommend even at $160.

I have used both Bose QC and XM4. In terms of sound quality both are same with 5% or less difference. Noise cancellation is also almost same with XM4 being bit better in cancellating fan noise and speech to a better extent than Bose. And I find overall build quality is good in both of them.
In terms of functionality, Bose QC's have buttons, no touch controls or additional fancy features to tweak or control through app. Buttons are of high quality and are tactical. Sony on the other hand has much better functionality though their app and also support lossless music which is a plus. It all boils down to personal preference of user, if you want to keep everything simple to use and no need of additional features, go for Bosr QC. Otherwise, Sony XM4 are the best.
Personally I like the additional functionality and features and appreciate to be able to tweak as per liking and surrounding environment. You can't go wrong with either of those.

PS. Whichever you get, do check sound quality by listening to different kinds of music, especially ones with very high frequency/tones and with lower ones.. cause one I received earlier had sound in a steady plane and it was not catching tones on higher and lowers edges .

Agree on touch control. But they are comfortable on my head and ears. The noise cancelling on airplanes is amazing.

I have both, the Sony's are amazing with great sound and outstanding ANC. The Bose aren't quite as good, they are close to the Sony's sound quality but are inferior in the ANC arena. The Bose are lighter and I use them for running and workouts.
Comfort is very subjective but they are both equally comfortable for my head size.

I think the ANC is better on the xm3 but that might be in my head. Both sound fantastic and are great for me all day wear.

I'm not sure why but I spend more days on the xm3 but either one would be fine. Might be a texture preference the xm3s are a smooth plastic while the xm4 has a little roughness to it. But only an autist like me would notice. They are both fantastic and after several years I expected the xm3 batteries to fall off but I still only charge them every other day. The ear cups eventually rip and I'm on my 3rd set. I end up doing yard work and go outside with them on all the time so they get sweaty, too.

After trying different tiers of ANC headphones at various price ranges, I can say this is 100% worth it. I wouldn't bother with anything less after experiencing these. It's rare to say a single piece of tech changed my life so much and has stayed relevant for so many years. I can't say enough about these. They really changed my life. I'm the guy that's always trying to save a buck by compromising (example a 5090 budget but end up buying a 5060 TI) but this is one I wouldn't compromise.
